  2. Adam <-> Charles <-> Adam If you received an A upon entering today, you are ADAM. If you received a C upon entering, you are Charles. • On a blank sheet of paper, as your character, write a letter to your brother. In your letter, you must address 3 specific incidents or significant moments from Chapters 1-6. Really tell Charles/Adam how you feel about everything going on in your life and your feelings about your brother’s current situation. (10 minutes) • Find your brother in the class and trade letters. • Write a brief response to your brother’s letter, specifically responding to one of his concerns or questions. Now, we discuss!

  3. Midrash - an early Jewish interpretation of or commentary on a Biblical text,clarifyingorexpounding a point of law or developing or illustrating a moral principle.

  4. Reviewing Chapters 1-6 • If East of Eden is a modern-day midrash, what is Steinbeck clarifying or expounding on from the original Cain and Abel story? • At this point in the novel, what is the Hamilton family’s role when contrasted against the Trask’s? • At this point, who are the other important characters in the text?
