  1. Wydział Geodezji i Kartografii Politechnika Warszawska Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography http://www.gik.pw.edu.pl Presentation of the Faculty preferred areas of research activities in COPAL Project Krystyna Czarnecka, Ryszard Preuss, Jerzy Chmiel COPAL-PolandSeminar, Warsaw 18 Jan. 2008

  2. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography - general characteristics Historical note The Faculty of Land Surveying (first name), Poland's oldest scientific research and teaching institution concerned with geodesy, began independent activity at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) on September 1st, 1921, In 1925 the Faculty became The Faculty of Geodesy. ... Presently, the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography is the only faculty in Poland covering all problems related to this branch of science. Its equipment and teaching content are comparable to those offered by the best geodetic faculties in Europe.

  3. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography D i v i s i o n s Engineering Surveying and GeodeticDetail Surveys Geodesy and Geodetic Astronomy Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Systems Land Management and Nature Environmental Sciences Cadastre and Land Management Cartography Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography - general characteristics Dean of the Faculty: Prof. dr hab. inż. Krystyna Czarnecka Structure of the Faculty

  4. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography - general characteristics • Studies • Faculty teaching and research staff: 115 persons, students: 1200 • The Faculty offers two forms of education : • - full-time courses (leading to BSc or MSc degrees and postgraduate PhD), • - extra-mural courses (leading to BSc, MSc, PhD) • other complementary and postgraduate courses. • Studies leading to an MSc degree give opportunities to specialise in the following areas: • -Geodesy and Satellite Navigation, • -Engineering Surveying, • -Cadastre and Land Management, • -Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, • -Cartography and Geographic Information Systems, • -Spatial Information Systems.

  5. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography - general characteristics Areas of Scientific and Educational Activity geodesy, detail surveys, physical geodesy, engineering and urban surveying, cadastre and land management, satellite geodesy, gravimetry, geodetic astronomy, geodynamic investigations, geodetic metrology, photogrammetry (including methods of image data acquisition and technologies of analytical and digital compilation of photogrammetric products), remote sensing, cartography (including mathematical cartography, map compilation, map production technologies, thematic cartography, automation in cartography), geographic and land information systems, methods of geodetic data processing, adjustment calculus, information technology in geodesy, ecology and soil conservation.

  6. Didactic and research cooperation with foreign partners: • Vienna University of Technology • Hannover University • Stuttgart University • Zurich University • EPFL Lousanne • JRC Ispra (Italy) • European Soil Office

  7. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography • Selected Research projects • Project of Ministry of Science and Higher Education: „Elaboration of vector data for topographic database and methods of change detection based on VHRS data” • active participation in: • Project of liquidation of flood disaster effects (World Bank Project) • elaboration of technical standards for topographic database • creation of LPIS (IACS) conception in Poland

  8. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography • Preferred areas of research activities in COPAL Project: • Photogrammetry • georeferencing of image data • Creation of: DEM, DTM, 3D city model • Image processing to create digital ortho • and true-ortho • Data acquisition for topographic databases building • Geodesy • On-line positioning of objects by GPS technology • GPS measurements of topographic objects for databases

  9. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography • Preferred areas of research activities in COPAL Project: • Remote Sensing • monitoring of inland water quality using hyperspectral images • study of lakes eutrophication processes • study of urban climate using thermal images • Study of vegetation (spectral characteristics, land cover, agricultural crops, good agricultural practices, etc)

  10. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography • Presently used digital image data in research and didactic activity: • aerial analogue photographs, • digital aerial photography, • laser scanning, • radar images (aerial and satellite), • satellite images (with different spatial and spectral resolutions),

  11. Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography Expectations from participation in COPAL Project easier access to diverse types of digital imaging data – what allows to extent and improve research activity Presently we are acquiring digital image data (aerial and satellite images) from commercial distributors. The purchase costs are in many cases kind of barrier for conducting the researches in wider aspects
