  2. Let’s do it! We met to perform the experiment and we brought somecitrusfruit

  3. OUR MEASUREMENTS

  4. Procedure • The estimatedexperimenttime for thisactivityisabout five to ten minutes. It does not takelong to create the fruitbattery! • Now, the first step is to takeyourcitrusfruit of choice in hand, and squeezeit on allsides with yourhandswithoutbreaking the skin. Youraimis to soften the citrusfruitenough to extractitsjuices.  • The next step is to puncture the citrusfruit with the nails. Insert the nailsinto the fruitabout 2 inchesaway from eachother, in such a waythat the twonails stop at the centre of the fruitwithouttouching.

  5. Discussion & Results • Citrusfruitshaveanacidiccontent, and the moreacidicitis, the betteritis for conductingelectricity. Thisis the reasonwhyeventhough the nailswere not touchingeachother, yourfruitbatterystillworked! The fruitcontainspositivelychargedions. Whenyouinsertedthe zincnailinto the fruit, the negativelychargedionsor the electronsstarted to move from the fruit to the zincnailthusleaving the protons in the fruit. This transfer of electronsgenerateselectricity as soon as youattach the wires to the nail.

  6. Any type of citrus fruit, be it lemon, orange or sweet lime, will generate electricity when they are properly connected in a completed electrical circuit. In a fruit circuit, the fruit acts as a battery. The citric acid and water in the fruit act as an electrolyte, thus enabling the flow of electricity through the circuit. In a normal battery, be it of any size, two metals are used to generate electrons, and a conductive chemical eases the flow of these electrons through the circuit. When the fruit acts as a battery, the acid and water contained in it act as the conductive chemical.
