  18. God’s Inquiry, condemnation 16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you will bring forth children; yet your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field; 19By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” • Pains in childbirth • Submission • Ground is cursed • Toil to eat • Unproductive • Physical Death • And… • Expulsion from Paradise (vs. 23-24)

  22. Sin corrupts all of man 16For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,... 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. 27 … and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 32… that those who practice such things are worthy of death • Sin affects all of man: • (Romans 1: 16-32) • -Depraved Minds (vs.28) • Futile Speculations • Fools • -Foolish Hearts • Darkness • Lustful • -Dishonored Bodies • Sickness • Death

  29. What is lacking from man’s approach • Underestimate Man’s adversaries(They are not easily identified /defeated) • The Devil (the powerful enemy of our souls) • The Flesh (its weakness vs. its powerful appetites) • “I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness,…” Romans 6:19

Man endeavors to follow Jesus in word and deed “God begin the process of redemption of the whole of man (Spirit, Soul, Body) • “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 • Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. • Psalm 51:10

  42. God’s solution: redeem Man SPIRITUAL REALM Solve the Problem of Sin Body Spirit of Man Soul PHYSICAL REALM “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Rom. 5:8

  43. Man’s redemption SPIRITUAL REALM 1. Solve the Problem of Sin Spirit of God 2. Receive New Life from The Spirit of God Body Spirit of Man Spirit of Man LIFE Soul PHYSICAL REALM LIFE “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  44. Myths about redemption • Redemption is a single transaction: • It is only about going to heaven eventually • It is just a change of position (condemned to saved) • Redemption was accomplished completely at the cross • Redemption is exclusively about salvation of the soul • All else that man is will be destroyed • Only the soul will go to heaven • Redemption is the work of God alone • Man has no part in it • If anything, man only needs to give in: “Let go and let God…”

  45. truths about redemption • Redemption starts with a single transaction: • The price of Redemption was paid completely at the cross • The access to God is open. The offer of salvation is available to all men. • Whosoever believes changes position (death to life); receives the assurance of salvation • Redemption is about salvation of the soul and the restoration of the whole man: • A clean heart, a renewed spirit. A new body at the resurrection • This restoration is a process that starts here and ends there • Salvation is the work of God, but man’s will is involved. Redemption also involves the active participation of man • An expressed desire to be redeemed completely • Applied spiritual effort to allow God to restore us. Yield to the Spirit of God • Fight daily the battle of faith with the armor of God • Allow the Lord to cleanse him daily.

  46. Man’s redemption SPIRITUAL REALM 1. Solve the Problem of Sin 2. Receive New Life from The Spirit of God Body Spirit of Man Soul • Think with the Mind of Christ PHYSICAL REALM “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.…” I Cor. 2:16 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. I Pet. 1:13

  47. Man’s redemption SPIRITUAL REALM 1. Solve the Problem of Sin 2. Receive New Life from The Spirit of God Body Spirit of Man Soul • Think with the Mind of Christ • Walk by the Spirit PHYSICAL REALM “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. …” Gal. 5: 16-17

  48. Man’s redemption SPIRITUAL REALM 1. Solve the Problem of Sin 2. Receive New Life from The Spirit of God Body Spirit of Man Soul • Think with the Mind of Christ • Walk by the Spirit • Live by the Spirit PHYSICAL REALM “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. ” Rom. 8: 13-14

  49. Thinking with the Mind of Christ(Dealing with “Carnal” Styles) Assert: “Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” Gal. 5:213-14 Earn: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Eph. 2:8-9 Avoid: “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, …. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules... So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace” 2 Tim 2: 3-5, 22

  50. Thinking with the Mind of Christ(Dealing with Carnal Motivations) Independence:“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians2:20 Acceptance: “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” Romans 8:15 Security: “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?” Romans 8:34-36
