  2. Graphically the theme MOSAIC is easy to visualize but what about textually/verbally?

  3. What is the mood or tone the theme conveys? Brainstorm answers and write on board.

  4. Using the list of brainstorm ideas… list catch phrases or concepts that capture the essence of a selected word/fact. Brainstorm phrases/concepts from ideas on first brainstorm list.

  5. Let’s test drive any phrase or concept that resonates as a potential theme Theme phrase or concept

  6. VERBAL DEVELOPMENT WORD SPIN-OFFS -Select one word from the theme phrase and write down phrases that use that word. Repeat with another word if you can.

  7. CONCEPT SPIN-OFFS CONCEPT SPIN-OFFS Examine the theme. What is it about? List things that are closely associated with the message associated by the theme. Repeat the process with other words or phrases, as needed.

  8. FINAL EXAM EFFECTIVENESS – Does the theme speak to a wide range of students? APPLICABILITY – Will it cover up and downs of the school year? RELEVANCY – Will students relate to the theme? If you answered “NO” to any of the questions, start over.

  9. APPLY THE THEME TO SECTIONSEXAMPLES…. (theme – Who’s on First?)
