  1. Sports Injuries By: Andrew Brawner

  2. Audience • My audience will target seniors to juniors in high school. • Primarily used for a sports medicine class. • This Power Point covers the basics of each injury, and its treatment.

  3. Injuries Covered • Turf Toe • Quad Strain/Tear • Hamstring Strain/Tear • Calve Perth’s Disease • Mallet Finger • Jersey Finger

  4. Turf Toe • Mechanism/Definition • Turf toe is usually caused from either jamming the toe, or pushing off repeatedly when running or jumping.

  5. Turf Toe Signs and Symptoms • Restricted movement • Pain • Swelling • Tenderness

  6. Turf Toe • Treatment • RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression and elevate. • Walking boot maybe used to help walk for first week after injury. • Short leg cast that keeps toe in plantar flexion(facing down).

  7. Quad Strain/Tear • Mechanism/Definition • A pulled quadriceps is often the result of a strength imbalance between the quadriceps and the hamstring. • Commonly caused during sprinting and planting.

  8. Quad Strain/Tear Signs and Symptoms • Discomfort • Pain • Tenderness • Spasm

  9. Quad Strain/Tear Treatment • RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. • If torn surgery maybe needed.

  10. Hamstring Strain/Tear Mechanism/Definition • Change of function from knee stabilization to extension of the hip. • Like the quadriceps strain/tear it is found commonly during a sprinting and planting activity.

  11. Hamstring Strain/Tear Signs and Symptoms • Muscle soreness • Discomfort • Pain • Tenderness • Tightness

  12. Hamstring Strain/Tear Treatment • Rice- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. • If torn there is a chance of surgery needed.

  13. Calve Perth’s Disease Mechanism/Definition • Loss of blood circulation to femoral head of the leg.

  14. Calve Perth’s Disease Signs and Symptoms • Groin pain radiating to knee or abdomen. • Limping.

  15. Calve Perth’s Disease Treatment • Rice- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. • Brace usually need.

  16. Mallet Finger Mechanism/Definition • A sudden involuntary movement of the distal phalange resulting in a tearing of the extensor tendon.

  17. Mallet Finger Signs and Symptoms • Pain and tenderness. • Swelling and redness. • Inability to completely extend finger. • Distal phalange in bent position.

  18. Mallet Finger Treatment • Most do not need medical attention. • Splint (6-8 weeks) • Surgery (Fire Wire kept in for 4-6 weeks)

  19. Jersey Finger Mechanism/Definition • Hyperextension of the distal phalange while in a clutching or grabbing position tearing the flexor tendon.

  20. Jersey Finger Sign and Symptoms • Pain when moving finger. • Inability to bend. • Pop or rip felt when first occurs. • Bruising after 48hrs. • Tenderness. • Lump felt in palm or finger.

  21. Jersey Finger Treatment • Splint (6-10 weeks). • Reconstructive or fusion surgery (7-10 days for optimal results). • Floppy finger tip- results from not getting surgery.

  22. Velocity Performance and Rehab Center • I had a second degree ankle sprain senior year of high school. • I went to velocity for rehab twice a week. • They helped me get back to game shape as soon as humanly possible.
