  2. Facts • Araminta Harriet Ross Tubman: Born in Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1820 (don’t know the exact date of birth). • At the age of 12, she witnessed another slave trying to escape. An overseer noticed and brought the slave back. Harriet Tubman went to help the slave by guarding him from the overseer. The overseer was aiming for the escape slave, in his hand was a 2 lb iron weight. Instead the weight hit Harriet Tubman in the head. Not fully recovered from her injury she had seizers, black outs, and dizzy spells. • She came back to save her husband (John Tubman), but by the time she got there he was already married to another woman. That was on her third trip back to the south. • In 1869, an author named Sarah Bradford published a biography called “ Scenes In the Life of Harriet Tubman.” • In 1874, Tubman and Nelson (second husband, married 1869) adopted a baby girl named Gertie. • Conductor of the UGRR. (Underground Railroad) • She carried a gun with her (not to shoot the owners) to threaten the fugitives that she was freeing at the time, saying “ You'll be free or die,” if they started to change their mind and wanted to turn back. • She went on 19 trips to save slaves who wanted to be free, but saved around 300 slaves in a ten year span. • Died on March 10, 1913 (Age: 93). Almost one hundred years from today.
