  2. Pericles • Led Athens from 460 to 429 bc were known as the age of Pericles and were a “golden age” • He promoted culture and democracy

  3. Athenian Democracy • PericleanAthens is a direct democracy where citizens take part in day to day government. • Assembly meets several times a month • Council of 500 is selected by lot and paid by a stipend – they conducted the daily governmental business

  4. How it worked… • A jury system exists; each jury consists of hundreds or even thousands of jurors. • Citizens can ostracize public figures considered a threat to the democracy.

  5. Culture in Athens • Pericles rebuilt the Parthenon • Athens became the cultural center of Greece • The arts were encouraged through festivals, competitions, and building programs • These programs created many new jobs which contributed to the economy
