Strategic Prevention Framework • Assessment: What is the problem? • Building and/or Mobilizing Capacity: What do you have to work with to address the problem? • Planning: What is your plan for doing the work? • Implementation: How will you get the work done? • And Evaluation: How will you know if you’ve succeeded?

  9. SPF SIG Goals • 1. Prevent the onset of and reduce the progression of substance abuse ( including childhood and underage drinking) • 2. Reduce substance abuse related problems in communities. • 3. Build prevention capacity at the state and local levels

  10. Priority Problems for MN SPF SIG • Past 30-day alcohol use among 6th, 9th, and 12th graders • Binge drinking among 9th and 12th graders • Binge drinking among 18-25 year olds

Planning & Implementation Grant • Target population •  Past 30-day alcohol use among 6th, 9th, and 12th graders • Binge drinking among 9th and 12th graders • Kinds of interventions that might come to our community with this grant: • Environmental interventions such as policy change, or social norms marketing campaigns such as Positive Community Norms (Most of Us campaign) • Other

  12. Details • Who can apply: Communities who can address all three priorities • What the state is looking for in grantees: high capacity, high need, ability to address two (P&I) or all three (SPF SIG) priorities • Timeline: RFPs are scheduled to be released between October and November 2010.

  13. Drug-Free Communities Grant • Five-year Federal grant • $125,000/year each year • Potential for five-year renewal • Community-based prevention for alcohol, tobacco and other drugs • Requires existing coalition for at least six months, representatives from 12 sectors
