  2. Overview • Blood Sugar Regulation • Why Fish Oil? • Omega-3s are vital cell membrane constituents • Too much omega-6 triggers cellular inflammation • Fish Oil Supports Normal Blood Sugar • Proven benefits • Blood Sugar Formula • Why Nordic Naturals

  3. Blood sugar levels are tightly regulated The body is always balancing blood sugar levels through a process called glucose homeostasis • After a meal, blood sugar levels rise dramatically • The pancreas releases a hormone called insulin • Insulin travels through the blood to cells that use sugar as fuel for energy • Insulin binds to insulin receptors on these cells • The binding of insulin is the signal that facilitates sugar transport into the cell where it is broken down to make energy • Insulin also directs the storage of excess sugar This process is the foundation to a healthy metabolism. Blood sugar imbalances result in a cascade of metabolic dysfunctions that contribute to weight gain, mood fluctuations, poor circulation, vision problems, and heart problems. Diabetes Care 2007:30:364–366.

  4. Why fish oil? • Fish oil is the preferred source of the essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA • EPA and DHA are not made by the body and therefore must be obtained from the diet or supplementation • EPA and DHA are required structural components of every cell membrane in the human body • As structural components of cell membranes, EPA and DHA influence hormone binding, cell receptor action, and cell fluidity and permeability • Blood sugar control requires: • The binding of insulin (a hormone) • Insulin receptor action • The movement of sugar from the blood through the cell membrane Fish oil also improves health concerns related to blood sugar imbalances. Research shows that fish oil supports heart, mood, eye, and circulatory health.

  5. Chronic inflammation is a triggering factor for poor blood sugar control • An imbalance of too much omega-6 (linoleic acid) from vegetable oils forms a type of eicosanoid that promotes unhealthy levels of inflammation • Over-production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids eventually leads to cellular dysfunction and lack of sensitivity to the hormone, insulin, which triggers poor blood sugar control • Fish oil supports the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response

  6. Fish oils support individuals with blood sugar imbalances Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids: • Improve and prevent defects in insulin receptor signalingAm J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 2002 Mar;282(3):E664–71 • Prevent alterations in blood sugar control • Prevent the progression from poor blood sugar control to the development of type 2 diabetes Am J Clin Nutr 2006;83:1499S–1504SJ Am Diet Assoc 2005 Mar;105(3):428–40 • Reduce coronary heart disease and mortality in women with diabetes Circulation 2003;107:1852–1857 • Lower risk of type 1 diabetes when used during the first year of lifeAm J Clin Nutr 2003;78:1128–34 • Support neuroplastisity which enhances insulin receptor viability

  7. Fish oil—whole body support Proposed Mechanisms of Action: • Activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and thereby: • Improve insulin action • Promote healthy cholesterol levels • Prevent atherosclerotic changes • Improve hormone receptor binding and receptor activity • Reduce plasma triglycerides by up to 30% • Improve cell membrane fluidity and permeability • Support the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response • Reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, and support heart health • Be protective against retinal and macular degenerative diseases • Reduce oxidative stress on cells • Improve immune function • Promote healthy metabolism and body composition

  8. Recommendation for EPA and DHA • The American Diabetes Association recommends two to three servings of fish per week; in order to obtain adequate amounts of the omega-3 fats, EPA and DHA Franz et al. 2004 • This recommendation results in intakes of EPA + DHA that range from 57 mg to 514 mg EPA + DHA per day, which falls significantly below internationally agreed upon recommendations. • EPA and DHA content of fish varies significantly (>300%) with species, season, diet, packaging, and cooking methods • Farm-raised and commercially-prepared fried fish are low in omega-3 fats

  9. Guidelines for EPA and DHA intake Internationally Agreed Upon Recommendations Adults (15 years and older) Minimum 500 mg EPA + DHA per day For heart health support Minimum 1 gram EPA + DHA per day For mood support Minimum 1 gram EPA + DHA per day Individuals with high triglycerides 2–4 grams EPA + DHA per day Simopoulos AP, et al. Workshop Statement on the Essentiality of and Recommended Dietary Intakes for Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Prostaglandins, Leuko and Essential Fatty Acids 2000;63(3):119–121. 10. Omega Blood Sugar • Supports healthy blood sugar levels • A blend of the highest quality fish oil and two important nutrients, chromium chelate and alpha-lipoic acid, proven to: • Help manage healthy body weight • Support healthy blood sugar levels • Omega Blood Sugar is a full spectrum of support for individuals with blood sugar imbalance • Promotes optimal cell function and metabolism throughout the body

  11. Why Chromium? • Chromium is known as “glucose tolerance factor” • Chromium supports insulin function Cefalu WT, Bell-Farrow AD, Stegner J, et al. Effect of chromium on insulin sensitivity in vivo. Journal of Trace Elements in Experimental Medicine 1999;12:17–83. • People with blood sugar imbalances often have too little chromium; supplementation helpsAnderson RA, et al. Elevated intakes of supplemental chromium improve glucose and insulin variables in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes 1997;46(11):1786–1791. • Overall, Chromium promotes healthy blood sugar levelsCefalu WT, Hu FB. Role of chromium in human health and in diabetes. Diabetes Care 2004;27:2741–51. • Chromium works by helping to increase the number of binding sites for insulin to enter the cells Dose 200 µg (mcg)

  12. Why Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)? • ALA improves insulin function Maddux BA. Protection against oxidative stress-induced insulin resistance in rat L6 muscle cells by micromolar concentrations of alpha-lipoic acid. Diabetes 2001;50:404–410. • ALA increases cellular uptake of glucose Henriksen EJ. Exercise training and the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Free Radic Biol Med 2006;40:3–12. • Supports and protects peripheral nerves Packer L, Kraemer K, Rimbach G. Molecular aspects of lipoic acid in the prevention of diabetes complications. Nutrition 2001;17:888–95. • ALA is the universal antioxidant—both fat- and water-solublePacker L, Witt EH, and Tritschler HJ. Alpha-Lipoic acidas a biological antioxidant. Free Radic Biol Med 1995;19:227–250.  • ALA protects cells throughout the body from free radical damage • Often called the “anti-aging” nutrient • ALA increases glucose uptake from 40% to 300% and is the only antioxidant that recycles vitamins C and E from their molecular building blocks • Overall, ALA Supports healthy blood sugar levels Dose 300 mg

  13. Quality matters • Primary concern with taking fish oil supplements is the quality of the supplement • Freshness • Purity • Source of raw material • Environmental responsibility • Taste • Good safety profile
