The structure and organisation of sport in the UK is complicated, complex and inter‑connected • This is largely because the situation has emerged over the last 150 years. • The system could be described as decentralised.... • Sports clubs and local associations, for example, are not dictated to by central Government. • What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

The development of an elite performer requires commitment from the performer and support from a wide range of other agencies. • UK performers in the 2000 Sydney Olympics achieved more success than ever before. • How has the development of elite performers been supported by the National Lottery and Sport England? (4 marks) • What criteria must performers meet to receive funding from Sports Aid? (2 marks) • The National Lottery has given over £100 million to support elite performers. Why should we spend such large sums of money on elite support? (3 marks)

ANSWERS! • (a) (i) 4 marks for 4 of- 1 Grants from national governing bodies to individuals; 2 Sport England or other national sports councils distributes lottery funding; 3 World Class Performance programme; 4 NGB must have a performance development plan/increase in participation therefore more elite coming through; 5 with measurable criteria; 6 also through development of UKIS/EIS or equivalent/description of role of English Institute of Sport; 7 provision of medical/technological/advice/sports science; 8 improvements in coaching through NCF/sport coach UK; 9 Grants for facilities/coaching or equivalent/academics/centres of excellence.

  6. (ii) 2 marks for 2 of- • looks to support young/up and coming performers/disabled performers; • with potential/recommendation of NGB; • with proven financial need; • not supported by other sources/are amateurs. (iii) 3 marks for 3 of­ • development of national pride; • country has responsibility to allow citizens to develop abilities to the full; • promoting the country on the international scene/attract world events; • National Lottery presented as means of raising money for ‘good causes’; • sport seen to promote social value assimilation/benefits/role models for young; • Economic benefits to country/regeneration or equivalent.
