  1. Expanding Our Tree of Knowledge Created by Catalina Charles November 24, 2008 The World Beyond Google

  2. Helping Students Gather the Information They Need. Have you ever noticed that students tend to use google as their primary searching option? Sometimes finding information on google can be like searching for a needle in a haystack.

  3. Although Google has many wonderful tools, it tends to overshadow all the other possibilities.Google often gives a searcher an overwhelming amount of hits to have to sort through. Thus making us feel like this…..

  4. Just as there are many resources to choose from, there are also many searching options. Here are a few ideas… • Other search engines/portals • Metasearch Sites • The Invisible Web

  5. Other Search Engines and Portals- These are just a few options… • Yahoo.com • Yahooligans • Lygo Visual Search • Ask • Kidsclick!

  6. Yahoo http://www/yahoo.com The Yahoo site offers an array of news, ads and links to various services. It has been one of the Web’s major search engines along with Google. For more streamlined searches use http://search.yahoo.com • For the younger crowd try Yahooligans! http://yahooligans.yahoo.com

  7. Lygo Visual Search http://lygo.com Lygo is a visual search engine that produces results by showing the page you will be sent to if you choose that result. It is very handy for those of us who are visual learners.

  8. Ask.com http://www.ask.com Ask.com has changed its site over the years from a question answer site (Ask Jeeves) to currently offering a Web search, additional databases and other features. It also serves users in other countries such as Japan, Germany, Spain, and the U.K.

  9. Kidsclick! http://kidsclick.org Kidsclick! Is a site created by librarians at the Catskill Library System Kidsclick! provides fewer, more relevant results to cut down on search time. Fewer choices is always a good idea when searching with young children.

  10. Metasearch SitesThese sites search several search engines at once, all with one search command. Clusty http://clusty.com Clusty provides users with related search topics to help organize your thoughts.

  11. KartOO http://www.kartoo.com • KartOO is a visual meta-search site that creates a graphic organizer of results and related content.

  12. The Invisible Web • There is a world of information available that regular search engines are unable to find. This data is called the Invisible Web- information that is located in certain databases, or in collections of different file formats.

  13. Complete Planet allows for a deep web directory search for highly topical information. Search invisible web databases with just a few key strokes. http://aip.completeplanet.com Google Scholar allows users to search peer-reviewed journals, books, abstracts, preprints, theses and technical reports with its site. http://scholar.google.com
