  2. Intro (just listen) • Strong Mail rulers = successful empire • Later, many weak Mali rulers. • Couldn’t stop raiders. • Raiders destroy much. • Edges of territory became scared. • Declared independence • Mali became smaller.

  3. Weak rulers (take notes) • Mansa Musa died, son Maghan take place. • Maghan = very weak ruler = trouble in the empire • Meghan did not/could not stop raiders. Later rulers had hard time ruling. Mansa Musa, the great ruler

  4. Raiders (take notes) • Invaded Mali from East. • At Timbuktu, burned schools and mosques. Severe blow, Mali never fully recovered. Mali gradually declined. • 1431, Timbuktu attacked again, captured by Tuareg, nomads from Sahara. Modern Timbuktu, recovered from raiders.

  5. Empire’s Size (take notes) • Too large, government couldn’t control it. • Edges of territory began chipping away, declaring independence. • Around 1431,Takrur, northern Mali, declares independence. • By 1500, most of lands conquered, were lost. • Today, small part of Mali remains. Mali’s empire, around 1300.

  6. Conclusion (Just listen) • After Mansa Musa died, Mali declined. • Maghan, weak ruler, couldn’t rule well. • Raiders poured into Mali, destroyed Timbuktu. • Edges of territory broke off, declaring independence. • Next section, the rise of the Songhai empire.
