London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom. • The city of London has a resident population of 7.375. • The most important London Monumentsare: • The Tower of London • The Palace of Westminster • Westminster Abbey • Big Ben • Buckingham Palace • The changing of the guard • The London Eye • Piccadilly Circus • St Paul’s Cathedral • Tower Bridge • Trafalgar Square.

  3. THE TOWER OF LONDONItis a fortress that includes the White Tower , the Royal Palace and itsprisons.The White Tower isthe oldest. The Jewels House contains the famous Crown Jewels.It was a state prison and the most important prisoners were Thomas More and AnnBoleyn.

  4. THE PALACE OF WESTMINSTERIt’s the political centre of the United Kingdom, the home of the British Parliament.

  5. WESTMINSTER ABBEYIt has been the setting for every coronation since William the Conqueror in 1066.It has a Gothic Style.

  6. BIG BENIt’s the nickname applied to the Great Bell by Sir Benjamin Hall. Nowadays Big Ben is the nameused to call the clock.

BUCKINGHAM PALACEIt’s the Queen’s official London residence.The Palace was built in 1705 for the Duke of Buckingham and it is located between Hyde Park and St. James’s Park.Buckingham Palace’s state rooms, ballrooms and gardens are open to visitors during August and September while the Queen makes her annual visit to Balmoral.

  8. THE CHANGING OF THE GUARDIt’s the traditional ceremony performed everydayoutside Buckingham Palace involving a new guard exchanging duty with the oldone. The guardsmen wear a full-dressuniform: a redcoat , blacktrousers and a blackhelmet called«bearskin» becauseit’s made of fur. The ceremony takes about 45 minutes duringwhich the band plays music.

  9. THE LONDON EYEIt’s a modern but already very popular tourist attraction in London. It’s a giant observation wheel located in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank.The 135 meterhigh structure was designed by the architectural team of David Marks and Julia Barfiel.Thanks to the costruction of the glass capsules, the passengers have 360 views over London.Many famous landmarks are clearly visible, including Buckingham Palace , St.Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament.

  10. PICCADILLY CIRCUSPiccadilly Circus is a roadjunction and public space of London's WestEnd in the City of Westminster. It was built in 1819 to connect RegentStreet with Piccadilly.The Circus is particularly known for its video display and neon signs mounted on the corner building on the Northern side, as well as the Shaftesbury memorial fountain and statue, which is popularly, though mistakenly, believed to be of Eros.

  11. ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL.It’s the spiritual focus of the Nation. It stands in the heart of the City. St.Paul’s was built after the «Great Fire» of 1666 by the architectSir Christopher Wren who designed it to give a feeling of the space and light. In St. Paul’s the Royal wedding of Prince Charles and princess Diana wascelebrated

  12. TOWER BRIDGEIt’s a bascule bridge above the Thames.It is next to the Tower of London, whichgives the bridge its name.It was built in neo-gothic style in the second half of the nineteenth century. It opens when large ships have to pass.

  13. TRAFALGAR SQUARETrafalgar Square is a public square in the City of Westminster. Its name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory in the NapoleonicWars with France and Spain that took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, Spain. The square has been used for community gatherings and political demonstrations and it’s the Centre of annual celebrations on New Year’s Eve.
