  4. Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a volunteer organization of Parents and Teachers who are committed to the goal of quality education and nurturing environment for every child. PTA is the largest volunteer child advocacy group in the USA. PTA

  9. General Information • Friday Folders will go home each week. Please empty them and return them the following school day. • Please send backpacks daily and check backpacks each afternoon for notes and messages. Look for the RED folder for important notes. • Students are responsible for taking all items out of their backpack each day. • If your child is to travel home any way other than his/her routine way, a written note is required and should be sent in to his/her teacher. If you have an unscheduled need to change your child’s dismissal please call the school office. • Teachers check emails during the work week, but not always during the school day. • Prior Care and All About Me forms will be in the cubby if you did not come to summer testing. • Name tags for first week will be in his/her cubby.

  11. HCPSS Family File • You should have already received a letter in the mail with the code for registering on the Family File. • This is where you find online emergency card. You must complete this online as soon as possible.

  13. WaterlooBEST • Waterloo is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) school. Each student is expected to do his/her Waterloo BEST. Be respectful Embrace differences Spend time learning Take responsibility Students will earn BEST bucks for showing their Waterloo BEST.

  14. Waterloo BEST • Waterloo BEST expectations are followed throughout the building – classroom, cafeteria, recess and related arts. • Kindergarten students do not cash in their BEST bucks. You do not have to save any BEST bucks that your child brings home.

  15. Stoplight Chart • Students start on the “green light.” If they need several reminders about doing their BEST, they will move to yellow. They will have the opportunity to move back to green with improved behavior. If a student needs many reminders, he/she may move to red. If he/she moves to red, they will remain there for the rest of the time period. The chart will be sent home each Friday!

Bus/ Carpool / Walkers/ CA • Students should arrive and leave school on the first day in the method they will throughout the year. • Adults will help with all transportation in the morning and afternoon for the first week. • Bus safeties will start within the first week. • Practice bus numbers at home and label your child’s backpack. • Be sure to help your child recognize his/her bus stop and another student who may get off at the same bus stop.

  19. Language Arts • We will have a Reading Night September 24, 2015 from 6-7:30pm. • General Reading Processes • Print Awareness • Phonemic Awareness • Decoding • Sight Words – environmental print and high frequency words • Fluency • Vocabulary • Comprehension of informational and literary text

  20. Language Arts • Reading activities will begin on the first day of school. • We will make formal reading groups once your child’s strengths are identified. • Writing - Handwriting - Units of Study oral storytelling acrostic poetry book reviews fact books ABC books personal narratives

  21. Lunch • You should have received your lunch account number and directions for setting up a lunch account. We strongly encourage you to put the money on your account! • Lunch is $2.75 and milk is $.50. • Lunch is 30 minutes long. This is difficult for many students, but they will adjust! • Practice at home by setting a timer. • We will not have snack in the classroom.

  22. Recess • Recess is 30 minutes long. • Please send your child dressed for cold weather. • Please label all outdoor clothes and lunch boxes.

  23. Math • Howard County follows Common Core curriculum. • More information can be found at www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics/ • The Kindergarten Math standards are Counting and Cardinality, Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Measurement & Data, and Geometry • You will not see many worksheets come home. Most of the activities are hands-on, using manipulatives.

Related Arts • P.E. - 3 times a week (30 minutes each) - Please wear sneakers that velcro or tie or your child will be unable to participate! • Music - 2 times a week (30 minutes each) • Media - 45 minutes a week - Please return books weekly • Art - one hour a week … SMOCKS! • Technology – one hour a week • Your child’s schedule will come home the first week

  29. Assessments • Ongoing • Based on observation of skills as: • Independent • With Assistance • Not Apparent at this Time Goal: Have children as independent as possible by the end of Kindergarten. Independent means that your child demonstrates/uses the skill/behavior CONSISTENTLY AND APPROPRIATELY without any prompting.

  30. Assessments • Behavior and Effort Codes • 1 Outstanding • 2 Satisfactory • 3 Needs Improvement **Most typically performing Kindergarten students will be receiving a “2” in behavior and effort. This means they are demonstrating the expected Kindergarten behaviors.

  31. Assessments The first month of school, teachers are observing students and collecting baseline data on their strengths and weaknesses. The first scheduled parent teacher conference will be the week of Thanksgiving! A letter will come in the Friday Folder closer to that time to explain how to sign up online. Keep this paper with your child’s code for other conferences.

  32. Volunteers Will start in November in the classrooms. Each teacher will send home a note with a calendar to sign up. Volunteer responsibilities can include: working with individual or small groups of students, or preparing teacher/student materials. You MUST complete an online volunteer training before volunteering or attending field trips.
