  1. Can my Employer Reduce my Salary    When you begin a new job your contract will include details of your terms and conditions. The most important of these is likely to be your salary and your hours of work. Once agreed, changes to the terms of the contract can only be made in exceptional circumstances – such as in response to changes in ​employment legislation ​or with the agreement of the employee. Under the law you must be paid the salary as stated in your contract. The exception would be if your contract included a variation clause which might allow a reduction. But in general If your employer tries to reduce your salary without your agreement, they would be in breach of the terms of the contract. However , there are times when your employer might request that you take a cut in salary and , unlikely though it sounds, under certain circumstances you might agree. The most

  2. common scenario would be if the business is struggling financially and unable to meet the cost of its salaries. If the company goes under, you could end up worse off as you may lose your job. So accepting a reduction in your salary could be the best option. Even then, your employer would still need your agreement. Alternatively an employer who cannot continue to pay the agreed salaries may decide to restructure the company. This usually involves making some posts redundant and possibly creating new posts with a lower rate of pay, leading to lower salary cost for the company. Restructuring in this way should only be done as a way of avoiding financial collapse of the company. It should not be used simply to save money. Companies could face legal challenges and would be expected to provide full justification for their actions, Ideally, if salary cuts are required, ​employment law solicitors should aim to achieve an agreement through negotiations with employees, trade unions and other relevant employment.
