  2. James Hurst • James was born in North Carolina in 1922. He has had experience in many arts from paintingto writing short stories to writing plays. He graduated from the North Carolina State College with a degree for chemical engineering. He has lived in New York where he worked in a bank for 34 years, in Rome to study music, and in North Carolina where he was born and is living now.

  3. Vocabulary • Careen- to tilt or sway while moving, as if out of control • Serene- calm; peaceful; undisturbed • Blighted- damaged or spoiled • Reiterate- to say again or to do again; repeat • Precariously- dangerously; insecurely

  4. Theme • The theme is to love what you have while you have it because the narrator didn’t like Doodle and worked him so he could be a normal brother but he died before the narrator taught him all the things that the narrator looked for in a brother, if the narrator were to love Doodle for who he was and not be selfish he might have loved Doodle more than if he had finished his training

  5. Plot • Characters-the narrator, Doodle, the mother, the father, Aunt Nicey, Mr. Heath, Ibis, miss Leedie • Setting- Old Woman Swamp, Horsehead landing, the farm, the barn loft • Basic situation- the narrator training Doodle to be a normal brother • Internal conflict- the narrators dislike of Doodle • External conflict- man vs. nature- drought man vs. man- the narrator disliking Doodle • Complications- Doodle is physically challenged

  6. Climax- it started raining after a long drought • Resolution- Doodle dies • Protagonist- The narrator • Dynamic- the narrator • Static-Doodle

  7. Literary Element • Characterization- the method a writer uses to reveal the personality of a character. A character can be revealed through the narrator’s statements; through the character’s words , thoughts, actions; and through other character’s thoughts and comments. Characterization helps you understand a character’s actions.

  8. Dig Deeper • When the narrator teaches Doodle to walk, everyone thinks he did it to be a good brother, but he did it so he wouldn’t have a crippled brother • When the narrator takes Doodle out he sways and tilts the wagon to make Doodle not want to come with him • The narrator made Doodle touch the mahogany casket that his dad made for him when he was young in case he died, he said if Doodle didn’t touch it he would leave him in the loft forever • When it was raining Doodle falls behind and the narrator sprints to leave Doodle behind then comes back to find Doodle dead • This concludes that the narrator was angry at Doodle because he isn’t a normal brother
