  3. Walt Whitman (Lit. pg. 504) Writing Career: 1820s-1892 Best known for writing in free verse, in which he writes in the rhythms of spoken language. About as patriotic as Uncle Sam-the dude was all about ‘Merica! At the age of twelve, Whitman began to learn the printer's trade, and fell in love with the written word. Largely self taught, he read voraciously, becoming acquainted with the works of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Bible.
