WSS Search Architecture WSS search is provided by SQL Full Text Indexing (SQL Server reqd) Enable through WSS Central Administration Catalog created for each content database on farm Rule of thumb allow 30 - 40% disk space for catalogs IFilters supported (Office and 3rd party) Limited in scope to the top-level site Search terms are basic No phrasing or Boolean (multiple terms treated as an OR)

    3. WSS Search Summary Focus is on team site Functionality ok for small team sites Scalability could be an issue in large deployments > 1 million items => wait! End-user confusion when SPS is in picture as well Designed primarily for stand-alone WSS installations

    4. SPS Indexing Process Define content source: location Internal and external Protocol handlers: retrieval HTTP, FTP IFilters: recognition Office, PDF, .ZIP, XML, Project, etc. Normalizers: data streaming Word stemmers, breakers, noise filters Catalog: destination
