  2. SDS at a glance • Programs • BS Mechanical Engineering • ACCEND program (MBA, MEng, MSME) • BS Mechanical Engineering Technology • MS & PhD in Mechanical Engineering • 34 Faculty • Largest School in the College • 900 Undergraduate Students • 200 Graduate Students

  3. Graduate Studies Committee Solid Mechanics and Nano/Bio Mechanics (Dr. Dong Qian, Chair) Intelligent Manufacturing and Design (Dr. Sam Huang) Thermal and Fluid Systems/Energy/Nuclear Eng. (Dr. Milind Jog) Structural Dynamics, Vibro-Acoustics and Controls (Dr. David Thompson)

  4. Presentation Overview • ME Degree Requirements • MS • PhD: Contact Dr. Qian and/or Dr. Thompson • Advising and Administrative Details • Graduate Courses

  5. ME MS Degree – GE ACE Program Credit Hour Requirements • MS (semesters): 30 semester credit hours • ACE courses count as 10 semester credits (3 math, 6 ME and 1 Research and/or thesis) • 2 semester credits of project/mini-thesis • 18 classroom semester credits at UC (minimum 12 ME + 3 Math) • Final oral exam • Semesters begin in September, 2012.

  6. ME MS Degree – GE ACE Program Have your schedule approved by your assigned advisor. Preliminary approval will be available from faculty from the graduate studies committee. Have a Program of Study form approved by your advisor by the end of autumn. MECH/EGFD course substitutions: Many courses in AEEM, MTEN, and other CEAS programs may be approved by your advisor on a case-by-case basis. Math substitution: Some MECH, EGFD, and other CEAS courses may substitute for math credit on an advisor-approval basis. Courses generally include most control, signal processing, computational design and numerical analysis courses. Normal course load: GE-ACE students entering in 12A will be on campus for one semester (plus one course via distance learning or part-time) to meet minimum degree requirements. Consult with your management and GE Technical Education regarding your expected course load while on campus.

  7. ME MS Degree (continued) • The ME MS non-thesis degree allows for a two (2) semester credit project, also known as a “mini-thesis” to GE students. • Your GE supervisor and/or GE Technical Education will advise you of what limitations may be in effect regarding your choice of topic. • Contact your UC advisor and GE Technical Education regarding additional details related to the mini-thesis process.
