  1. Like Father, Like Children Galatians 3:26-4:7

  2. Like Father, Like Children • Two questions for all, especially for those who are parents now or wish to be in the future: • What would you like your children to become? How would you make it happen? • What would you do if you wish to give your children inheritance but they cannot handle it yet?

  3. Like Father, Like Children • The keyword is “BOUNDARY”: • As parents, one of the most important responsibilities is giving children boundaries. • What must be done when they cross over? Keyword #2 is: DISCIPLINE!!! And as they reach adulthood, we entrust them with what was theirs in the first place – keyword #3 is RELEASE. Into what? Into their FULL POTENTIAL! Or even better!!

  4. Like Father, Like Children Boundary Promise evpaggelia Discipline Release In the spirit realm, The Father’s Heart is the PROMISE TO BE LIKE HIM, and to SHARE A PART OF WHO HE IS.

  5. Like Father, Like Children • “Promise” also lies at the very center of a Biblical theme: THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN basilei,a tw/n ouvranw/n • This is the focus of John the Baptist’s preaching (Matt. 3:2). • The famous Charter of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matt. 5:1 – 7:27) also places heavy emphasis on promises, in which Jesus unveils various aspects of the Kingdom; examples: • The CHARACTERISTICS of its citizens (e.g., 5:1-16) – the promise to be BLESSED (Maka, rioj) to those sharing part of the Father’s nature. • A model prayer that begins with these words, “Our Father who is in heaven … YOUR KINGDOM COME …” (6:9-10) – asking for promises, “GIVE us …” (di,dwmi; 6:11). • Life characterized by NO WORRIES (6:24-34) – the promise to ADD (prosti, qhmi), “…will be added to you” (6:33b).

  6. Like Father, Like Children • The church is the New-Testament demonstration of the Kingdom (Matt. 16:16-19) which is, again, based on a promise, “I will build …” (oivkodome,w, having the significance of “restore”; 16:18). • But beginning the very first century, the church has been STRUGGLING WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROMISE, i.e., HOW WE UNDERSTAND THE WORKING OF THE ASPECTS (e.g., Acts 15)? Boundary Promise evpaggelia Discipline Release

  7. Like Father, Like Children • Such is the background of The Epistle to Galatians: Paul is combating a group of Judaizers who claim that ONLY LAW LEADS THE WAY TO FREEDOM, and Gentile Christians are finding it difficult to keep up!!! In other words, freedom – or release – seems further and further away!!! And as a result, the concept of the Father is beginning to be more foreign to them, not to mention being like Him.

  8. Like Father, Like Children • What is Paul’s understanding of the promise? (Gal. 3:21-25) Law (boundary + discipline) = Tutor Life, freedom (release)

  9. Like Father, Like Children • And he continues to explain his thesis of the promise: IV. HEIRSHIP – RELEASE IN THE FUTURE (Gal. 4:6-7) II. LAW – BOUNDARY + DISCIPLINE (Gal. 4:1-3) Boundary Promise evpaggelia Discipline Release • ONENESS – RELEASE NOW (Gal. 3:26-29) III. SONSHIP – RELEASE NOW (Gal. 4:4-5)
