Institute Beliefs • We guarantee an equitable education by radically changing an institutionally racist school system. • We have the responsibility to guarantee all students, families and staff are valued and belong. • We have the responsibility to guarantee a learning environment where all students and staff are held to high expectations and achieve at high levels. • We must persevere with a clear vision and purpose to be a racially conscious courageous agent of change. • We play a critical role in educating all students, thus every moment and interaction with a child impacts learning.

  4. 1. We guarantee an equitable education by radically changing an institutionally racist school system. We will: • Speak your truth. • Remain open and engaged. • Laser focus on race, prior knowledge and experiences. • Respectfully listen to all perspectives. • Create open dialogue through courageous conversations. • Continually question, reflect and research alternatives to current practices.

  5. 2. We have the responsibility to guarantee all students, families and staff are valued and belong. We will: • Reserve judgment. Invite/encourage people to come as they are. • Listen for understanding. Ask clarifying questions to seek multiple perspectives. • Embrace the four agreements of BD. • Demonstrate the four agreements in all of our actions. • Actively listen without judgment. • Affirm cultural norms and beliefs.

  6. 3. We have the responsibility to guarantee a learning environment where all students and staff are held to high expectations and achieve at high levels. We will: • Commit to sharing strategies that are proven by data to be successful at improving learning. • Be fully engaged and present at all times. • Reflect and be courageous in implementing strategies.

  7. 4. We must persevere with a clear vision and purpose to be a racially conscious courageous agent of change. We will: • Challenge the status quo. • Be reflective and deliberatively take action. • Share stories and invite feedback.

  8. 5. Play a critical role in educating all students, thus every moment and interaction with a child impacts learning. We will: • Value multiple perspectives. • Be conscientious of our own and others’ behavior on the group. • Value all adults to build a positive climate and culture.

  9. 4 Agreements • Speak your truth • Stay engaged • Experience discomfort • Accept and expect non-closure 6 Conditions • Focus on PERSONAL local and immediate • ISOLATE race • Normalize SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION & multiple perspectives • Monitor agreements, conditions and ESTABLISH PARAMETERS • Use a “WORKING DEFINITION” for race • Examine the presence and role of “WHITENESS” • Challenge the status quo • Be reflective and take deliberate action • Share stories and invite feedback • Share evidence-based strategies & be courageous in implementation • Invite and encourage people to come as they are • Actively listen for understanding and ask clarifying questions to seek multiple perspectives • Share and celebrate racial and cultural norms & beliefs • Be conscientious of our own and others’ behavior in the group (be purposeful or intentional with our own)
