HICPAC Guidelines Objectives Provide recommendations for all components of healthcare delivery system; primarily inpatient can be adapted to outpatient, EMT, nursing home, care in the home settings Reaffirm Standard Precautions as basis for transmission prevention Based on epidemiology of disease Reaffirm Respiratory/Cough Etiquette (SARS-CoV, influenza) as a primary infection control measure to prevent transmission of diseases transmitted by respiratory secretions

Terminology Standard Precautions - basic precautions Expanded Precautions - In addition to Standard Precautions and includes: Contact Precautions Droplet Precautions Airborne Infection Isolation Basic and Expanded Precautions explained later in lecture Special SARS precautions addressed by Jon Rosenberg
