Neal Dow(1804-1897) By: Justin Hong “Here is a fearful enemy of God and man--the liquor traffic; it makes ruthless war upon the people; it blasts and destroys their homes as with pestilence and fire; it kills savagely, cruelly, more than a hundred thousand of them every year; robbing them first and driving wives and children to rain and despair.”

  2. Neal Dow’s Accomplishments • After he was elected as the mayor of Portland, Dow passed the “Maine Law” (1851), which made completely put temperance into effect in Maine. This was repealed in 1856. • In 1989, his autobiography The Reminiscences of Neal Dow was published. • Dow led a path for the temperance movement across the U.S. and also helped to abolish slavery by spreading his ideals.
