General manager HooiWengKheong said 56 robberies in 82 of their outlets were recorded last year. After the chain expanded to 127 outlets this year, the number of cases rose to 217 as of Dec 17. Hooi describes the figure as “alarming and scary” as KK mart has incurred losses of over a million ringgit since 2008. “Even more terrifying is the danger to our 1,300 staff and customers as the robbers were usually armed,” he said at a press conference held at Wisma KK in DesaPetaling yesterday. Over the past four years, at least 20 KK Mart employees had suffered injuries during such robberies. Three have been hospitalised for serious wounds.
