Silicosis has been known about for over 500 years Industry has known about Silicosis for about 500 years.
In 1556 the German scholar, Georguis Agricola described diseases such as silicosis in his book ‘De Re Metallica’. He even includes proposals for ventilation as a control and preventative measure.
In the late 19th century a pioneer in Occupational health, Alice Hamiliton conducted major studies on Silicosis and concluded “obviously the way to attack silicosis is to prevent the formation and escape of dust”.
And here we are in 2008 talking about similar issues.

10. The Principal Contractor should be engaging with:
Clients
Designers
Product manufacturers
Plant Hire Company’s
Supply Chain We All have a role to play in the hazard identification and the risk mitigation process.

11. Types of Contract:
Early Contractor Involvement (ECI)
Private Finance Initiative (PFI)
Public Private Partnership (PPP)
Design, Build, Finance & Operate (DBFO) There are a number of contract types that the principal contractor and the team have an opportunity to make a difference.
By challenging any process where it is felt that more could be achieved regarding risk elimination and control
The ECI contract is a good example of such an opportunity. During the early design stages there is an opportunity for Design 4 Safety workshops to be held. These will include the CDNC, design managers and construction managers.
The aim of these workshops is to challenge both client and designers regarding materials and design concepts. The outcomes are then documented in a design coordination plan which includes a design hazard log.
As well as engaging at contract level the construction industry has a number of forums. These include Major Contractors Group
Civil Engineering Contractors Association and the Contractors Confederation. These have all formed working groups to address occupational health.
Government is also aware of the problems and have signed up to the ‘Securing Health Together’ strategy which sets targets that are to be achieved by 2010.

14. When you cut stone or concrete, there are tiny crystals (called silica dust or respirable crystalline silica) in the dust cloud that can damage your health. If you breathe in the silica dust, it gets trapped deep in the lungs and can cause serious diseases over time. You can see from the picture that the maximum amount of silica dust the law says you are allowed to breathe in over a working day is actually very small indeed.
Time to clear the air! Use water suppression to keep the dust down and wear the right dust mask. When you cut stone or concrete, there are tiny crystals (called silica dust or respirable crystalline silica) in the dust cloud that can damage your health. 18. He shortens his life and he hastens his death
Tally hi-o, the grinder
Will drink silica dust in every breath….
Won’t use a fan as he turns his wheel
Won’t wash his hands before he eats his meal
But dies as he lives as hard as steel
Where rests the heavier weight of shame?
On the famine-price contractor’s head
Or the workman’s under-taught and fed
Who grinds his own bones and his child’s for bread
(Anon.) I will leave you with a short peom which I came across whilst researching occupational health. It is, I feel, quite appropriate.
