Vision Social Media • ES Social media will • Offer high quality science content in a variety of formats that appeal to various age groups • Increase public awareness of ES science • Communicate timely information • Engage interactively with the public • Provide an informal venue for discussion between scientists and the public • Allow ES scientists, students, etc to share photos/stories/work and engage in discussion • Increase brand recognition * 75% of computer users 12-49, 50% of users 50-65 and 25% of users 65+ belong to a social network or use another form of social media on a regular basis (Lenhart et al., 2010).

Content and Deployment Social Media • Content guidelines • New ES products/info is first priority • ES in the news • New products/info from partner organizations • Science or hazard related events • Timely or relevant news • Education related items • Highlights of ES science, activities, photos, etc • Deployments • Have Tweeted and posted from • Hazards on Capitol Hill • SCEC Conference • LAB/ES Meeting • GSA • SESE Day • ASU Homecoming • AGU (Soon!) • Covered the VA EQ (and equipment deployment) and hurricane • Highlighted all observatories, several active field programs, data products from all working groups and several recent publications • Featured many “ES in the News” articles • Have run “Photo of the Day”, “Station of the Day” and “Quote of the Day” features • Highlighted Education and Outreach products • Featured activities and products from our partners

Meeting Vision Objectives Social Media • ES Social media will • Offer high quality science content in a variety of formats that appeal to various age groups • FB and TW (ages 18-50) • Will post videos/blogs etc. as they are created (all ages; ages 18-29) • Increase public awareness of ES science • Already have over 67,000 post views! • Communicate timely information • VA EQ, hurricane, various conferences, other breaking news stories • Engage interactively with the public • Posting polls, public events (posting and attending) • Provide an informal venue for discussion between scientists and the public • ACTION ITEM - Need to encourage more ES scientists to visit and post • Allow ES scientists, students, etc to share photos/stories/work and engage in discussion • Several active field programs have posted photos, including pics from VA deployment • Increase brand recognition (all of the above)
