  2. Benefits of Dual Enrollment and Scholars Program • Increase student's College Readiness • Allow students to begin their College Degree earlier • Increase student's Grade Point Average • Save money towards a College Degree

Scholar’s Program • Goal: Students graduate with their High School Diploma and an Associate Degree from Miami Dade College (MDC). • How: Students earn the AA degree by taking a combination of Advanced Placement courses and Dual Enrollment courses at MDC throughout their sophomore, junior and senior years in high school. • When do they start? The summer after their freshman year. • Eligibility: Students must have an unweightedGPA of 3.0 and by pass the PERT exam (College Placement Exam). • College Classes: Once in the Scholars Program, students will be committed to taking two MDC dual enrollment classes every college semester, including summer B semesters. • Transportation: Doral Academy will arrange transportation to MDC for sophomores and juniors. Seniors are responsible for providing their own transportation to any Miami Dade College campus. • Schedule: A Scholar’s schedule will consist of five periods of high school courses and two periods of MDC dual enrollment classes. • Grades: Scholars are encouraged to earn A’s and B’s in all college courses in order to improve their success with college admission

Summer Schedule for theScholar’s Program • Psychology of Personal Effectiveness (CLP1006) • Introduction to Microcomputer Usage (CGS 1060) • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am until 4:10pm at Doral Academy Charter High School. • The first class will be from 8:00am until 11:20am, and the second class will be from 11:40 until 4:10pm. • PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF YOUR SCHEDULE. The dates are June 24-August 2, 2013.

Registration for Scholar’s Program • The schedule for each semester is organized by Miami Dade College and Doral Academy’s administration. • Schedules are usually created about a month before the semester begins. Semester dates are on Miami Dade College’s website. • Registration paperwork is organized by the Doral Academy’s Scholar’s school counselor. • Students must receive and turn in their registration forms to their Scholar’s School Counselor BEFORE the deadline. • Scholar’s e-mail list • DEADLINE for summer registration for Scholar’s program is MAY 9, 2013

  6. Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment means taking college courses while in high school.    • Where can I take classes? Miami Dade College OR Florida International University • When can I take classes? Any college semester, after school, in the summer or as an “early release” during your last two periods of your high school schedule. You can start as early as the summer after your freshman year. • How do I know if I am eligible? You must have and maintain an unweighted GPA of at least a 3.0. For classes at Miami Dade College, you must pass the P.E.R.T. exam. For elective classes at FIU, you do not need to pass any additional exams. You only need the 3.0 unweighted GPA. • How do I apply and register for classes? Complete the application process and registration form for the college or university. To request an authorization form to the take the P.E.R.T exam at MDC. To bring your completed application and registration form for counselor approval and signature. If you are requesting early release on your Doral Academy school schedule. If you have questions or concerns.

Registration for Dual Enrollment • Students are responsible for meeting the deadlines for the college or university. • Students are free to pick their classes and schedule, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their Doral Academy class schedule. • Students complete their registration forms, receive authorization from their school counselor, and go to MDC or FIU to register themselves for the classes.

Important Deadlines • MDC Scholar’s registration: May 9, 2013 application, contract and registration due to Mrs. Serrano-Prado • MDC summer Dual enrollment: Registration began March 4, classes start June 24; Application and registration due to MDC • FIU summer dual enrollment: May 28, 2013 application and registration due to FIU

  13. PERT Exam • Students need an authorization form from their school counselor to take the PERT exam. • Students can only take the PERT exam two times while in high school.
