ASSE - 4th PDCINTEGRATING THE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM STANDARDS Most popular of the management system standards of interest to Kuwait industry are: ISO 9001: 2000 - Quality management systems – Requirements ISO 14001: 2004 – Environmental management systems – Requirements with guidance for use OHSAS 18001: 1999 - Occupational health and safety management systems – Specification

ASSE - 4th PDCINTEGRATING THE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM STANDARDS Implementing management systems individually could lead to the following disadvantages: Variance in understanding and interpretation of common requirements of standards Avoidable duplication in documentation for common requirements Duplication of documents might lead to contradictions during implementation Individual audits of management systems would mean a wastage of time for auditing common requirements These disadvantages can be overcome by integrating the management systems and implementing them together.

  5. ASSE - 4th PDCINTEGRATING THE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM STANDARDS A convenient scheme for implementation of management systems would be: 1. Start with ISO 9001: 2000 - QMS 2. Combine with sector-specific requirements (like ISO / TS 29001: 2003) - QMS 3. Align the system with ISO 14001: 2004 – EMS 4. Fully integrate with IHSAS 18001: 1999 - OHSMS

  6. In a broad sense, the requirements that are common to the three standards are:1. Documentation requirements including control of documents and control of records2. Management responsibility including establishing the policies and objectives, management system planning, establishing responsibilities and authority of each function and communicating the same to the employees, appointment of MR, and reviewing the management system3. Resource management including provision of resources, competence, awareness and training4.
