Muscat VDNs Languedoc & Roussillon • 4 Appellations Languedoc • 1 Appellation Roussillon • Two Grape Varieties - Muscat à Petits Grains and Muscat d’Alexandrie • All made in reductive style • Harvested by hand at min 252 g/l sugar (14.8% potential alcohol) • Alcohol - 15% - 18% • Final residual sugar : min 11% (110 g/l)

  4. Muscat de Frontignan: Languedoc • The first and largest Languedoc VDN (1936) • 1922 acres (797 ha) • Average yield: 1.5 t/acre (25 hl/ha) • Clay/limestone and sand • Powerful exotic style

  5. Muscat de Lunel: Languedoc • Most easterly appellation (1943) • 802 acres (321 hectares) • Average yield 1.3 tons/acre (22 hl/ha) • Red stony soils, galetsroulés • 9 miles (15 km) from sea • Hot climate. Very early harvest.

  6. Muscat de Mireval: Languedoc • Most recent appellation (1959) • 650 acres (260 ha) • Average yield: 1.3 t/acre (22hl/ha) • Clay/limestone soil • Sea breezes.. Lighter style than Frontignan

  7. Muscat de Saint Jean de Minervois: LANGUEDOC • Smallest of the 4 appellations (1949) • 487 acres (195 ha) • Average yield:1.26 tons/acre (21 hl/ha) • Limestone - some red clay • Cooler , continental climate. • Altitude up to 990 feet (300m) • Later harvest than other VDN’s

  8. Muscat de Rivesaltes: ROUSSILLON • White only (1956) • Largest AOC for VDN at 12,027 acres (811 ha) • Average yield: 1.5 t/acre (25 hl/ha) • Muscat à Petits Grains and Muscat d’Alexandrie • Min alc 15%. • 90 communes in PO and 9 in Aude

  9. Muscat VDNs - Summary • Differences between most are very slight • Would be difficult to tell apart in blind tasting • Except : • Muscat de Rivesaltes • St Jean de Minervois

  10. VDNs Roussillon • 5 Appellations for VinsDouxNaturels • 35% of total production of Roussillon wines • Hot and Windy climates • Very low yields • Diversity of grape varieties and styles • Very young to very old wines

  13. Rivesaltes • Large area • Wide variety of styles • Grenatand Rosé • Tuilé, Ambré, Hors d’Âge, Rancio • Strict rules on residual sugar/alc • Style can be determined by colour

  14. Terms • Ambré : White, oxidative • Tuilé : Red, oxidative • Grenat : Red, reductive • Rosé : Rivesaltes, reductive • Hors d’Âge: Red or white, 5 years age • Rancio : Oxidative and Maderised

  15. Other Terms • Vintage : No longer permitted • Vendange/Récolte : replaces vintage • Rimage : Red, 12 months ageing in reductive fashion • RimageMise Tardive : 1-3 years ageing, reductive style • Hors d’Âge: Red or white, 5 years age, oxidative • Rancio : Oxidative and Maderised

  16. Maury • Red and White (1936) • Smallest AOC for VDN in Roussillon: 755 acres (302 ha) • Average Yield: 1.8 t/acre (30 hl/ha) • Black Schist • Same styles permitted as Rivesaltes. (Maury sec allowed from 2012)

  17. Maury • Same styles permitted as RivesaltesieAmbré, Tuilé and Grenat • Min 12 months ageing • Most modern wines made reductively • Old vintages still exist • As close as VDN can be to LBV and Vintage Port

  18. Banyuls • Red, White and Rosé (1936) • 1,547 acres (619 ha) • Average yield 0.84 tons/acre (14 hl/ha) • Grey schist, steep slopes • Min 50% Grenache Noir for red • Reductive v Oxidative ageing • Styles : Rimage, Hors d’Age, Rancio

  19. Banyuls • Extreme terrain • Pyrenees meet the sea • Everything is difficult..Climate, grapegrowing, harvesting, yields, even standing up..! • Co-fermenting • Bonbonnes (demi-johns) • Move more to “rimage” styles

  20. Banyuls Grand Cru • Red only (1962) • 427 acres (171 ha) • Average yield 0.77 t/acre (12.87 hl/ha) • Grenache min 75% • Ageing min 30 months • “Sec, brut, dry” styles (45-54 g/l RS)

  21. Banyuls Grand Cru • An anomaly • Not delimited like Burgundy or Alsace • Same geographic area as Banyuls • Not necessarily better quality than Banyuls AOC
