Territory • It is the most western nation of the European continent; • Area of 92 090 km ²; • Bordered on the north and east by Spain and the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean; half of coast in south Mediteran Sea, too • Comprises the mainland and the autonomous regions: the Açores and Madeira ;

  5. History • Half of Portugal was conquered/robbed the “mouros” (arabic people) . Stongreminiscencies in the South and in some villages/areas begin by “Al” (ex: ALGARVE) • Portugal started the process of exploration and expansion known as Discoveries; • Martime Routes and lands in North America, in South America, and East were discovered for the portuguese; • Our History begin at 1129 (CENT 12) .The establishment of the republic took place on 5 October; 1910

Climate • The months of spring and summer are sunny and temperatures are high and may occasionally move for 40 ° C in much of the country; • Summers are warm in the highlands of the north and the coastal region of the northern and central; more hot at the south • The Algarve, Madeira and the Azores, are above international tourist centers; • Normally, in the third week of September in Lisbon the temperature is around 20 º or a little more

Some features • The Portuguese style of music best known is Fado; In several restaurants of Lisbon is possible to hear this kind of music accompaigned by traditional guitars • The country is distinguished too by fine wines, cheeses and traditional “sausages” (called chouriço, paio, .. ); + Oporto wine • Traditional food: “Cozido à portuguesa ” in Azores is boiled in “geotherm hole”, “feijoada” and “Bacalhau” (cod) ; • In the area of sport, football is the most widely practiced;

  8. Early history of Lisbon was a battlefield for Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians It was Romans who started their two-century reign in Lisbon. Became one of the most significant cities in Iberian Peninsula and renamed Felicitas Julia.In 714, the Moors arrived to peninsula and resisted against Christian attacks for 400 years. When the Christians finally recaptured the city, it took one more century to repel all the Moors from the peninsula.Century XV Lisbon was then world's most prosperous trading centre. Furthermore, many attractions of the city at present such as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém, both classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, were built during this period. In 1755 na erthquake/tsunami destroyed significant part of Lisbon
