  2. Palestine • Definition: • Comprised of parts of Jordan, Israel, and Egypt. Referred to as the “Holy Land”

  3. Birthplace of 3 Religions Judaism – Began around 1000 BCE. City of Jerusalem served as a political and religious center. Christianity – Developed around 30 AD, Christians believethat Jesus was crucified and resurrected in Jerusalem. Islam – Developed around 600 AD, Muslims believe that Muhammad the Prophet rose to heaven from Jerusalem.

  4. Importance of Jerusalem Judaism – Western Wall (Wailing Wall), 160 foot wall of the Jewish holy temple. Symbol of faith and unity. Christianity – The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, stands on the hill where Jesus was crucified and the tomb of burial. Islam – “The Dome of the Rock”, the most beautiful structure in Jerusalem. Built over the rock from which Muhammad rose to heaven.

  5. Israel: The Western Wall • “The Western Wall” is part of the retaining wall supporting the temple mount built by Herod in 20 B.C. Jews were allowed to come to Jerusalem during the Byzantine period, once a year on the anniversary of the destruction of the Temple and weep over the ruins of the Holy Temple. Because of this, the wall became known as the “Wailing Wall.”

  6. Church of the Holy Sepulcher • Commemorates the hill of crucifixion and the tomb of Christ’s burial.

  7. Dome of the Rock • Jerusalem is one of the three holiest cities in Islam – It’s where Muhammad the prophet ascended to heaven

  9. Great Britain Rules over Palestine after WW I-WW II: Jews Arabs (Palestinians) UN Resolution 181 promised an Arab country • “Balfour Declaration” – Promised a Jewish state • “The Holocaust” – Worldwide sympathy for a Jewish homeland, led by the U.S.

  12. End Result: Jewish country of Israel is established in 1948. “Balfour Declaration” and “The Holocaust” sway public opinion. U.S. is the #1 supporter of an Israeli state. Israel is given approximately 55% of the land of Palestine; 30% of the population. Land that is left is divided between Egypt and Jordan. By the end of 1949, Palestinians have no land for a country.
