  3. Frankish Kingdom

  4. The Frankish Kingdom • began as barbarian tribe  emerged as empire • most famous Frankish king: Clovis I (466 – 511 CE) • conquered other barbarian tribes militarily • seized ex-Roman provinces in Gaul (with infrastructure!) • converted to Christianity  support of Roman pope, bishops in Gaul

  5. Clovis I • established Merovingian dynasty before death • series of civil wars over royal succession • Which Merovingian gets to be the new king? (must be male family member, several to choose from…) • From this chaos came the other major Frankish dynasty: the Carolingian dynasty

  6. Rise of Carolingians • Pippin I was 2nd in control (after King) • Pippin II had several advantageous marriages • 2 sons: Charles Martel and Pippin III

  7. Rise of Carolingians • Charles Martel: successful in military • Battle of Poitiers (732 CE) • Won battle that stopped Muslim expansion (Christian view) • Small skirmish (Muslim view)

  8. Pippin III • Asks Pope for support as King good timing! • 754 CE: Lombards threaten Rome, Pope Stephen II asked for support from Frankish Kingdom • Pippin III restores Papal lands • Receives anointment from Pope  Kingship now more spiritual • son Charles takes over

  10. Why was he great? • Strong, intelligent, many wives and children • 50 campaigns, greatest warrior of middle ages • 4000 Saxons slaughtered in a day • South into Italy • Ended Bavarian independence • Defeated Avars • Fought Byzantine Empire • Tried to occupy Basque in Spain but was defeated

  11. Government of Charlemagne • Divided into counties • 600 counties governed by a count who published Royal orders • Resolved legal cases • Collected taxes and tolls • Raised troops • Maintained roads and bridges • Count appointed by Monarchy

  12. Government continued • Missidominici– agents of the lord king • 1 count and 1 bishop sent around to check the books and conduct of the counts • Kingdom held together by oaths promising faith and loyalty

  13. Imperial Coronation 800 Went to Rome to help Pope, stayed all winter On Christmas day, crowned Emperor and Augustus …did he plan it himself or did he just accept when Pope crowned?

  14. Holy Roman Emperor • Christian King ruling Christian people • Frankish practices / Christian ideals • Dignity of imperial crown only granted by Pope • Carolingian Family gained power • Papacy gained military protector • Coronation marked end between Rome and Constantinople

  15. Song of Roland (1100) • Count Roland led rear guard which was annihilated • No one was allowed to mention defeat • Poem made Roland out as an ideal chivalric knight • Reveals popular image of Charlemagne
