Design Practice & Standards • Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) • California Traffic Manual Design Rules & Practice • Always meet ADA Compliance on New Projects • Minimum of Two Constantly Visible Vehicle Indications for all approaches. • One Constantly Visible Pedestrian Indication for each crossing direction.   10. Audible Pedestrian Signals Installation Criteria • Pedestrian Generators (disabled centers, schools, public transit) • Push Buttons (pretimed vs actuation). Are they working properly? • Major Streets Widths • Continuous, Unobstructed Crosswalks & Indication Visibility • Request from Visually-Impaired Patron Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

  11. Audible Pedestrian Signals Installation Time • If criteria met during time of design for new or major modification project, automatic. • Funding for up to 10 locations per year to respond to customer requests.   12. Pedestrian Countdown Signals Background • CSJ evaluation for the California Traffic Control Devices committee (CTCDC) in 2001 • MUTCD 2003 discusses use & recommends operation consistency. Still not California approved. • State of California to adopt MUTCD in August 04 with supplement (Countdown not discussed in supplement yet). Disabled Advisory Committee (DAC) April 12, 2004

Pedestrian Countdown Signals CSJ Practice • All new signals & major modifications in Downtown, will use the Countdown Modules. • Deployment outside of Downtown will occur after Caltrans adoption of the device. Equipment & Operation Requirements • Filled Upraised Hand/Walking Person Indications • Double Row Countdown • Start counting at Flashing Don’t Walk.   14. New PPB Equipment Tactile Push Buttons • Vibrating actuator w/directional arrow when “WALK” indication is in effect. • Ambient programmable audible messages.
