Groundwater. Large amounts of water are stored in the ground. The water is still moving, possibly very slowly, and it is a part of the water cycle. Zone of saturation. The depth below the surface in which groundwater completely fills all the pore spaces.

  1. Groundwater • Large amounts of water are stored in the ground. The water is still moving, possibly very slowly, and it is a part of the water cycle

  2. Zone of saturation • The depth below the surface in which groundwater completely fills all the pore spaces.

  3. Upper part of the zone of saturation is called WATER TABLE • Zone of aeration (unsaturated zone) soil is moist but mostly full of air. • Depth of water table depends on local conditions.

  4. Groundwater • Groundwater moves downhill. • Permeability the ability of a material to let water pass through. • An impermeable material does not let water pass through. • Clay is impermeable

  5. How water acts • Gravitational water water that trickles downward due to gravity • Capillary Water water that is drawn upwards in the water table and held in the pore spaces by surface tension.

  6. Aquifer • "aquifer," -water-bearing formations capable of yielding enough water to supply peoples' uses. • Permeable layer of rock. • Aquifers are a huge storehouse of Earth's water and people all over the world depend on groundwater in their daily lives.

  7. Wells • To produce water a well must tap into an aquifer. • Over pumping of wells lowers the water table • Leaves a cone of depression • Can cause shallow wells to dry up • Water (precipitation and run-off) being added back to zone of saturation is called recharge.

  8. Subsidence • When too much groundwater is pumped out of aquifer and the land starts to sink.

  9. Confined and Unconfined Aquifer • Unconfined aquifer are easily polluted • Confined aquifer are deeper and are between barriers that do not let pollutants through.

  10. Artesian Wells • A well in which water rises under its own pressure, without pumping. • If the pressure is great enough, the water will rise all the way to the surface and flow freely from the well • Has to occur in a confined aquifer.
