  1. SDP07Senior Design Project 2007 C. V. Hollot T. Baird Soules Monday 13 Feb 2006

  2. Outline • Overview: Senior Design Project 2007 – SDP07 • What is Design? • ECE 303 Assignment: SDP07 Project Description

  3. Overview

  4. Overview ECE 415 - Principles of engineering design process. Small groups of students design computer/electronic systems to specifications. Preliminary paper design followed by hardware or software prototype. Students must complete project in ECE 416. Prerequisites: ECE 313, ECE 323, and ECE 353. ECE 416 - Continuation of ECE 415. Design of small computer/electronic system built, refined, tested, and demonstrated. Final prototype shown to meet initial specifications. Final design review. Prerequisite: ECE 415.

  5. Overview Comprehensive Design Review - CDR Dec’06 Feb’06 form teams project description faculty advisor Oct’06 March’07 Preliminary Design Review - PDR May’06 PDR II SDP07 kickoff Sep’06 April’07 Comprehensive Design Review - CDR May’07 Public Demo Day

  8. What is design?

  9. What is design? • Engineering Science vs Engineering Design • Engineering Science >>> theory (Ohm’s Law) • Engineering Design >>> application of theory (Telegraph)

  10. What is design? • Engineering Design is characterized by…1. Application of theory2. Solving of open-ended problems >>> a problem with a multiplicity of possible solutions3. Working towards a specific end, a product

  11. What is design? Restating things a bit… • Engineering Science can thought of a set of truths or fundamental principles • Engineering Design can be thought of asa process. A process by which, theory (scientific truths) is applied towards the creation of a specific product or service which satisfy the stated needs of a client.

  12. What is design? Thomas Edison (1847-1931)vs. Nikola Tesla (1856-1943)

  13. What is design? Let’s think about design in the context of a fictional product…

  14. What is design? iRec

  15. What is design? • Designing theiRec

  16. What is design? TheiRecaportable monophonic solid-statedigital audio recorder

  17. What is design? • What theory (engineering science) would we need to know in order to design a portable monophonic solid-state digital audio recorder?Any ideas?

  18. What is design? • What theory would we need to know in order to design iRec, aportable monophonic solid-state digital audio recorder? The theory (engineering science) of…>> sound / acoustical energy>> microphones / acoustical transducer>> low-noise audio amplifiers>> analog to digital converters (ADCs)>> microprocessors / monolithic stored-program computer…

  19. What is design? • In order to design the iRec, we’ll need…the engineering science of…>> sound / acoustical energy>> microphones / acoustical transducer>> low-noise audio amplifier>> analog to digital converter>> microprocessors>> Flash EEPROM>> ergonomics / human-machine interface>> digital to analog converters>> audio power amplifier>> digital data transfer system

  20. What is design? [ Which sub-areas of the ECE universe do you want to learn more about? ]

  21. What is design? • In a large company, each of the previous sub-system areas would most likely have its own design team. • Each team would follow a similar process…1. Identify Needs2. Write a Technical Specification3. Create a “paper” design, considering design alternatives4. Build a prototype5. Refine the design6. Test integration with other sub-systems7. Send final design to manufacturing team

  22. What is design? Let’s consider a small part of the iRec design…. the selection of the iRec’s main microprocessor…

  23. What is design? The important characteristics of the iRec’s main microprocessor…> low cost> low power> appropriate speed> small size> availability> prog. language support> compatibility with automated manufacturing techniques> familiarity to team members

  24. What is design? • In ECE 415 you would present your microprocessor selection to your advisor and team members for review in the weekly meetings. • Review meetings common in industry

  25. What is design? The SDP Design Process 1. Identify Needs/Wants2. Write a Technical Specification3. Create a “paper” design, considering design alternatives4. Build a prototype5. Refine the design6. Test integration with other sub-systems7. Complete final prototype
