Spiritual Gifts • God Prepares & Equips Christians for Ministry • Every Believer has one or more Spiritual Gifts • Spiritual Gifts Purpose is to Build Up & Unify Body • Church is God’s Agent in the World to, • Evangelize – Win the lost to Jesus Christ • Disciple – Teach them how to be a Disciple of Christ • Greek words for Spiritual Gifts are, • Charisma (singular – grace gift) • Charismata (plural – grace gifts)

Spiritual Gifts Defined NT Word for “Spiritual Gifts” is charismata, Also translated “grace gifts” • In 1 Corinthians 12-14 charismata refers to “a special Spiritual ability to minister with effectiveness & power.” Other References, • “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them ..” - Romans 12:6 • “I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you … “ - 2 Timothy 1:6

Spontaneous Spiritual Gifts1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Gifts of Revelation: • Wisdom– Utter Words of Wisdom • Knowledge – Speak Spiritual Information • Discernment – Determine Spiritual Source Gifts of Power: • Faith– Godly Confidence • Healing – Agent of God’s Healing • Miracles – Means of God’s Miracles

Spontaneous Spiritual Gifts1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Gifts of Inspiration: • Prophecy – Speak Godly Truths Clearly • Tongues – Unknown Language Utterance • Interpretation – Interpret Public Tongues Called “spontaneous” because they come during Worship according to the Will of God’s Spirit. Remember: 1 Corinthians 14:32; 40, “And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. … Let all things be done decently and in order.” (NKJV)

Leadership Spiritual GiftsEphesians 4:11-12 • Apostle - God Sent Missionary • Prophet - Speak Godly Truths Clearly • Evangelist – Leading Unsaved to Jesus • Pastor – Shepherds Christ’s Church • Teacher – Communicating Divine Truth Others, • Bishop – 1 Timothy 3:1-7 • Elder – 1 timothy 1:6-9 • Deacon – 1 Timothy 3:8-13 (Women too!)

God’s Grace Grace is God’s Favor for Spiritual Leadership, • God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense • God’s Undeserved Favor to Forgive • Visible Expression of God’s Power • God’s Power in the Leader’s Life to Become all that God Destined him/her to Become • Without God’s Grace in Jesus Christ, Pentecostal Leaders are Nothing

  11. Marks of God’s Grace • Releases from Satan, Sin & Law (Rom 6:1-14) • Opens Way of Salvation (Rom 3:21-26) • Equally Shown to All (John 3:16) • Requires Receiver to show Mercy (Matt 18:22) • Always Available (Lu 11:22-24)

  12. Marks of God’s Grace • Not Dependent on Works (Rom 3:22-24) • Gives Confident Trust in God (Heb 4:16) • Grace is More than Sufficient (2Cor 12:9) • Grace is not Earned or Deserved (Eph 2:4-9)

Gifts and Grace • Salvation by Grace makes Believer Eligible for Spiritual Gifts & Call • God is No Respect of Persons at Distribution of Spiritual Gifts (Fruit) (Eph 4:7) • Greek charisma means “grace gift” • Greek charismata plural = Spiritual Gifts • Christians must be Open to Holy Spirit • Grace is Motivating Power for Gifts & Call • Fruitfulness & Effective Ministry are Signs of God’s Grace

  14. God’s Anointing - OT • Hebrew masahmeans “anoint by smearing, pouring or spreading holy oil of someone” • Hebrew masiahmeans “Messiah or the Anointed One” of God • In OT God’s Anointing is the way of Consecrating one to God’s Service – usually priests as in Ex 30:30

God’s Anointing - NT • Greek aleipho is used for “general anointings” but also used in Ex 40:15 – LXX for anointing priests • Greek chriomeans “to consecrate one for service to God” • Greek Christos is “the Anointed One” of God referring to Jesus Christ • Anointing in NT is Spiritual Enablement for Service to God; Anointing sick (James 5:14)

Anointing in the Early Church • Practiced “laying on of hands” as really a Sacrament of the Church, as Church Leadership in Cooperation with the Holy Spirit would lay their hands on Believers as a means of Imparting God’s Anointing for Service/Leadership (2 Tim 1:6) • God’s Anointing is God the Holy Spirit Coming onto & into a Believer to Enable that person to become Useful for the Eternal Work of the Kingdom of God on Earth (Acts 1:8; 4:31)

Anointing Importance • Producing Lasting Fruit for the Kingdom • Flow with God’s Activity (Acts 21:10-12) • Anointing of Holy Spirit with Personality, Natural Ability, Ministry Training, Divine Gifting, Call & more Cooperate Together to make one Effective in Kingdom Work • God’s Anointing for Service is that Essential Prerequisite to all else that is Indispensable in Producing Lasting Spiritual Fruit

Source of God’s Anointing • Birthed in Humility & Dependence on God • Holy Spirit Anoints God’s Chosen • Anointing Comes in Submission to God’s Authority (Matt 28:18; Jas 4:7-10) • Important for Church Leaders to become Familiar & Cooperative with the Moving of the Holy Spirit in a Worship Service (1Cor 14) & in Daily Life & Ministry to God’s people

Increasing God’s Anointing God’s Anointing Increases with, • Prove One’s Self Faithful in Small Things • Give Sacrificially of Self & Possessions • More Frequent Fellowship with God • Become Less as God Grows in Life/Ministry • Become Faithful Stewards of God’s Anointing • Prepare Self & Material for Ministry • Become Faithful & Skilled Minister the Word

Results of God’s Anointing • Enables & Empowers of God’s Work • Anointing, • Produces Lasting Fruit • Confirms God’s Authority & Blessing • Witness to God’s Kindness & Faithfulness • Enables Leaders to Peacefully Rest In God • Brings Sensitivity to Spirit & Human Need • Establishes Leaders as Approved of God • Manifests the Fruit of Spirit (Gal 5:22-23)

Results of God’s Anointing • Brings Presence & Power of God into Situations • Draws Leaders Closer to God in Fellowship • Leaders are Amazed at what God can Accomplish through His Anointing • Leaders must be Cautious, • Not to Hinder or Quench Holy Spirit’s Activity • Cooperate Fully with the Move of the Holy Spirit as give in Scripture in 1Corinthians 14

  22. Guidelines for Use of Spiritual Gifts in Church 1 Peter 4:10-11, “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (NKJV)
