  1. The Manhattan project Sample Project

  2. What was the Manhattan Project? • The Manhattan project was the collaboration of top scientists in the 1930s and 1940s to create the first atomic bomb. • 4 atomic bombs were produced • The Gadget was tested in a New Mexico desert • Little boy was dropped on Hiroshima • Fat man was dropped on Nagasaki • A 4th un- named bomb was never used Little Boy

  3. What was the purpose of the Manhattan project? • During WW2, America was at war with both Europe, and nations in the pacific. • Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor. • 3 days after that attack President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Attack on Pearl Harbor

  4. What was the purpose of the Manhattan project? • America went to war with Japan. • America was at war with Japan for 4 years • Up until the battle of Midway, Japan was winning, but America won the battle of midway, and was the turning point of the war in the pacific. • However, Japan was holding strong, and showing no signs of surrendering.

  5. The bombs drop • On August 6th 1945 the first Atomic bomb (Little boy) was dropped on Hiroshima in hopes that Japan would surrender • Japan still was holding strong. • On August 9th, 3 days later, Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. • Japan surrendered to the United states on August 14th.

  6. Why were these bombs so explosive? • Enriched Uranium was turned into Plutonium. • Plutonium is a highly radioactive, and reactive element. • When these bombs were dropped it caused mass casualties, and radiation that still exists today in those areas.

  7. What does this mean for the future? • At the point of the creation of the atomic bomb, the world changed forever. • People now had weapons capable of wiping out civilizations • This brought the America into the cold war with Russia, a time where America and Russia both had the capability to bomb each other.

  8. The Cold war • During the cold war, US relations with the Soviet Union (Russia) were severed. • America and Russia were allied during WW2. • During the cold war fallout drills were common practice in schools, offices, and other places. • America was prepared for a nuclear fallout at the hands of the soviets.

  9. What this all means for science • The Manhattan project was a huge event for science. • Scientists knew almost nothing about the atom before this. Leo Szilard

  10. What this all means for science • During the course of the Manhattan project some of the world’s top scientists in the fields of chemistry and physics, including: • Albert Einstein • Robert Oppenheimer • Niels Bohr • And many more Robert Oppenheimer

  11. What this all means for science • These scientists all worked together to create the most destructive weapon the world has ever seen. • During this time we learned many really important facts about the atom. • We learned how to enrich elements. • We learned about protons, neutrons, and electrons. • And most importantly we learned how they work together to either be great advances for our society, or deadly fallbacks.
