  4. Preparation We Will be Doing • We teach students the general ability in class, not teaching towards the tests, but kids will have what it takes to take the exams. • We will be giving them some practice tests starting 6 weeks before the actual exams. • If they want more practice, they can attend the afterschool Cambridge classes. • They can choose to purchase Cambridge practice paper and practice at home, in which case, they can go to the English department website to download the order form.

  5. TREASURESTREASURESTREASURES! • For the most part the schedule and information for language arts is the same this semester as it was last semester. • The only real change is that the spelling book is assigned as homework now as it is very easy for the students to do on their own.

  6. In the Language Arts Classes are Teaching: Guided Reading: Using the Reading Book (RB) Skills Practice: Using the Practice Book (PrB) Phonics/Spelling: Using the Spelling Book (SpB) Grammar: Using the Grammar Book (GrB) Writing:Using the Weekly and Daily writing prompts

  7. Homework • The students are still asked to review their reading skills at home every weekend. • They will continue to write New words and sentences for homework. • Periodically there will be other homework assignments that we will notify you about.

  8. Tests and Quizzes • For the midterms and finals the students will still be writing the Unit Exams for Treasures. • We will also still be giving the “weekly” assessments (every theme) as quizzes while we do the fluency tests. • We usually give a weekly spelling quiz the words come from the spelling books.

  9. Please Remember!!! • Please remember that the purpose of these tests and quizzes is NOTfor scores. • These are all tools to allow us to assess our students’ progress and help them succeed! • And that a score of 80% or higher is a good score!

  10. Language Arts Evaluation • In Language Arts the students are evaluated in a number of ways. • Teacher Shao gives the students a score for her grammar class which is not included in the English Score. (As you saw on the Fall semester Report Cards)

  11. Language Arts Evaluation • The students are given scores for their homework, participation, quizzes, projects(writing) and Exams. • The fluency test scores are included in the quiz scores.

  12. Language Arts Evaluation • Participation accounts for 15% of their score. • Quizzes account for 20% of their score. • Homework accounts for 15% of their score. • Writing projects account for 10% of their score. • The Exam accounts for 40% of their score.

  13. Writing Rubric Example Bonus marks can be earned by doing an extra good job or making a clear effort on this writing portion of the test.

  14. Theme Update

  15. We’re still following the Chinese curriculum, Teacher Cherry teachers the concepts in Chinese first and we review and teach the terms in English. • There are NO exams given in English Math. We cover all the same material in English as they do in Chinese so there is no need for another Exam. • English math is account for about 15% of their total math score.

  16. The students are evaluated by quizzes, participation, and assignments that are completed in class or at home. • Participation accounts for 35% of their English Math score. • Quizzes account for 25% of their English Math score. • Assignments account for 40% of their English Math score.

  17. How Can You Help? • Regardless of your English abilities or skills there are several things that you can do to help your kids. • Any practice they get is helpful. Whether it is them reading to you, or having a conversation with you it will be great for them • Encourage them to use English, to teach you, to read for siblings or friends 

  18. After-School Classes • If you’re concerned about your kids abilities, or if they are shy and need to build some confidence, I highly recommend they join the Treasures after-school class. • After-school is not just for students who are having difficulties but also for those who would like a little extra practice and to build their confidence.

  19. SUPER IMPORTANT! • Please, please, please remember that I CANNOT read Chinese so my notices are in English. If it’s super crazy important the school wants us to translate to Chinese. If you ever have a question please ask. • IF there is ever a difference between the English and Chinese PLEASE ask, it is most likely that the Chinese is incorrect, but check with me if there is ever any difference because I cannot read the Chinese notice to make sure it is actually correct. (Mistakes happen!)

  20. Questions? • Ask away, I think communication is very important so please do talk to me if you have any questions or concerns . • You can call me at the office in the school, they will page me, if I’m available I can come speak with you. • You can also email me at any time at magda@tea.chjhs.tp.edu.tw
