Celebrities • Example: Michael Jordan and Charlie Sheen in the Hanes • Why: Companies use celebrities to persuade people to buy their products by making people think that celebrities use their products and, by using that company's product, you will become as famous as a celebrity. Many people buy this line because, if a celebrity says it works, it should work.

Statistics/Facts • Example: 1,041,661 emails are being sent now. 7% of them contain the words, ”Miracle banana diet.” Why: Companies say these statistics, whether they are real or fake, because the companies believe that, if a product or company shows a high use or approve percent, people will use their product. Many times, this ploy is used by phone companies so that people will use their network or buy their phones.

  7. Image • Example: The store owner blows off the tobacco company owner’s offers to put the ad in his store. • Why: Image is used a lot to persuade people to do something or buy something. The two biggest users of this idea are public awareness ad makers and tobacco companies, though tobacco companies can’t show their ads on TV. The image tobacco companies use are powerful, rich, and good looking people who smoke, giving the idea that, “If I smoke, I’ll look like them,” which is not true.

  9. Slogan • Example: “Go Outback tonight.” • Why: Companies and restaurants use catchy slogans that anyone can remember to get people to go eat at that restaurant or buy the company’s product. The slogan is usually catchy, accompanied by a catchy song or jiggle, and is repeated sometimes upward to 4+ times.

  11. Color • Example: The two guys dump the colored slips of paper on the people. • Why: Color is used by many companies because it is eye-catching. People will take more interest in a bright colored object than a black and white object. People also remember the bright colored items more than dry and drab colored items.

Personal Pronouns • Example: “Will you reminisce with those you haven’t seen.” “Will you make your mark.” • Why: Personal pronouns, when used correctly, create a connection with the commercial's audience on a personal level. Many commercials use this technique to get the audience to listen up to the ad. This is used by public announcement ads, music groups, and other companies.

Rhetorical questions • Example: “If today was your last day.” “Will you make you mark.” • Why: Companies use this ploy to say, without saying it, that their product is the right thing to use or buy. Any other product is below their product. This creates a sense of inflation that their (the company’s) product is better than others.

  14. Command • Example: McDonald’s ad for the angus triple pounder, “Do not stare directly at the Angus triple pounder until it is firmly grasped in both hands. Look Away!!!!!” • Why: Commands create a thought that you need to buy the company’s product or something will happen to you. This ploy is sometimes very effective. Often very loud and annoying.
