Reform • Progressives: reformers who were committed to improving the living and working conditions in American life. • HOW? • Promote social welfare • Protect the environment • Make government more efficient…less corruption/waste and more democratic…all people should be involved in decision making for the United States.

  4. Who were they? • White, middle class, and college educated • Many were women • Belief in the nation’s founding ideals • Democracy, Opportunity, Liberty, Equality, etc…

  5. What was the progressive philosophy?What did they believe? • Defended rights of average citizens against the power of big business. • Political: participation and protection of the government • Economic: safe working conditions, fair wages • Social: some assistance to economically disadvantaged and better living conditions in tenement houses and slums

Reject Social Darwinism Social Darwinists Progressives • Americans are harmed when monopolies controlled the economy and the government was laissez faire (hands off) with big business. • Believed that the fittest people and businesses would succeed and be the most successful and others would fall behind.

  9. Solutions • Progressives want the governmentto solve society’s problems. • Balance needs and interests of business owners and workers. • Aid should go to needy people who were willing to help themselves. • Use political action to achieve reform.
