  2. NEW STANDARDS COMPLETED WORK • Chapter 7.9 - Animal welfare and beef cattle productions systems • Chapter 7.10 - Animal welfare and broiler chicken production systems

NEW DEVELOPMENTS • New draft of the chapter on animal welfare in dairy production systems • Announcement of 2 new ad- hoc working groups • OIE AHG on natural disaster risk reduction, • OIE AHG on the welfare of working equines • OIE reviews of 2 chapters on - Slaughter of animals for human consumption • Killing of animals for disease control

CHPT 7.9 ANIMAL WELFARE AND BEEF CATTLE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS • What are beef production systems in the definition of the OIE • intensive commercial systems extensive semi-intensive include all/either breeding, rearing, finishing • Note: veal production is excluded! • What is the aim of chapter 7.9? To give guidance on welfare aspects from birth of cattle through to finishing in all these systems

  7. CRITERIA TO MEASURE WELFARE • Behaviour • Morbidity rates • Mortality rates • Changes in weight and body condition • Reproductive efficiency • Physical appearance • Handling responses • Complications due to routine procedure management

EXAMPLES • Behaviour: • Low feed intake; respiratory rate; aggressive, depressive or abnormal behaviour. • Important to understand differences in normal behaviour of various types of cattle • Physical appearance • Ectoparasites • Abnormal coat (colour, texture, dirty) • Dehydration • Emaciation
