The History of Twitter • (and Social Networking) • Internet began in 90s with static information format • Development of forums to unite users by topic • Using RSS (Really Simply Syndication) • Foundation for Weblogs • Here comes social networking! • Visibility of networks of people • Terminology: Friends, Followers, etc. • Innovators: • Six Degrees (1997) • Live Journal (1999) • Friendster (2002) • Twttr developed in 2006 by Jack Dorsey • Based on SMS messaging • Social media meets social networking

  4. How Can We Use Twitter • Keeping In Touch • Making New Friends • Voyeurism • Entertainment/News Coverage • Connections with Like-minded People • Event Planning • Activism/Politics (i.e. Presidential Debates, Arab Spring, etc.) • Latest Corporation Information (contests, promotions, etc.)

Problems with Twitter • Can be overloaded when servers are overloaded (mostly during popular events, large news occurrences, etc.) • Communication stalled by third party use • TMI/Bombardment of Data • Personal vs. Professional Identity • Eternally on the web somewhere • Trouble with Blackberry OH NOT, NOT FAIL WHALE!
