  1. Learning Objective By the end of today’s lesson, students will have worked collaboratively with classmates to deepen their understanding of homework. This understanding will be used to write an argumentative essay on homework.

  2. Step 1 • Using the give one get one sheet, write down 1 item on your paper that provides your thoughts on homework. It can be a thought that supports homework or a thought that defends the idea of not having homework. • Example: I think homework is beneficial to prepare students for college. *This would take up one box on my sheet.

  3. Step 2 • You will be given 3-5 minutes to get up and walk around the classroom. During this time, you should be asking a classmate what their one thought on homework is. Make sure to put their name down on your give one get one sheet. • You will want to get a classmate’s thought to fill in each remaining box on your sheet. Do not worry if two classmates end up with the same thought or idea – this may happen. 

  4. Step 3 • Return to your original seat. With your table group, complete the T chart on the construction paper using each other and your give one get one sheets. You will have the “yes” side of homework and the “no” side of homework. Make sure that as one person is writing down the group’s chart paper, you are also writing down the T chart on the back of your give one get one sheet. This will help with your essay writing later today. 

  5. Step 4 • Choose one person to be the “share out” for your table group. This person will share out your strongest “yes” argument for homework and your “no” argument for homework. This person should be someone different from the person recording on the T chart. • As you are presenting, I will be recording our strongest yes thoughts and strongest no thoughts as a class.

  6. Step 5 • Any questions thus far? • We will now read the article “Does homework really help learning” as a class. • Anything to add to our T chart notes after the read? • Take a quick break and then we will be able to write your argumentative essay on the topic of homework.

  7. Step 6 • Using your collaborative discussions with classmates, give one get one sheets, presentations from your classmates, you will answer the following writing prompt: • Do you feel that homework really does help learning? • Include 2 paragraphs. Similar to previous writings, paragraph one should introduce the topic of homework and present both sides of the argument. Paragraph two should state your position. Your position should be supported with at least 3 examples from today’s activities. You can also include your personal thoughts or frustrations with homework, experiences, etc. • Each paragraph should be 5-6 sentences. • Remember a catchy title too! Good luck! 
