Library The Program • Welcome by Prof AcramTaji, Director (International HDR Students) • Work with Susan Gassonto discover more about research expectations and English for Research • Meet staff from the International Support Services, Careers and Employment, Student Union and Research Students Centre • 10.30-11:00 Morning Tea • Prof AcramTajiwill share her ownpersonal perspective of having supervised 45 HDR students to completion. Most of these were international scholars. 7 PhD theses were passed with no corrections, 37 passed with very minor corrections, and one with major corrections.   • Work with Susan Gassonon strategies for working with your supervisor • 12.15 Lunch – Meet other students and staff

Case Studies • The Task: Student and supervisor selecting a topic and meeting time and method based • The problem: Each thinks the other is leading. • The Task: Student and supervisor working together • The problem : Avoid calling each other by name (not wishing to cause offence by using the wrong name or pronouncing it wrongly). Eventually discovering they are meeting with the wrong person. • The Task: Meeting to discuss the topic • The problem : The wonderfully imaginative and creative supervisor brings all sorts of great ideas to the meeting. The diminutive student not wishing to cause offence, but not really understanding, returning each meeting with a new and wonderful approach developed on the bus trip in.
