Key Outcomes for the 2009 MTEF • Promoting a Culture of Reading • Libraries and social cohesion • Address severe disparities between poor rural and urban communities • Infrastructure Development • Libraries and IT – connectivity in rural areas can bridge digital divide • Publishing in Indigenous languages • Capacity Building and skills development

  7. Key Outcomes continued • Complete the Mdantsane Library • Support the planning and construction of two libraries in Khayelitsha, WC. • Support the production of tactile braille books by SALB and Biblionef • Support the SANCB to host the Louis Braille bi-centenary celebrations

  8. Key Outcomes continued • Cooperation with LIASA re promotions and marketing • Monitoring and evaluation • Norms and standards legislation for community libraries • Finalise further consultations on the LIS Charter with portfolio committee, MINMEC etc.

Achievements : Provinces • Improved coordination / relations between provinces and municipalities • 70 libraries provided with curriculum support materials, for distance learners in KZN • The upgrading of Zuurbekom library completed • A new library established in Kwaggafontein, MP • A new library at Hekpoort, Mogale City completed • Upgrading of Krugersdorp library completed • A new library established at Mkhuhlu, Bushbuckridge

  11. Achievements : Provinces • A new library established at Kamaqhekeza, Nkomazi Municipality • A new library established at Morgenzon in Gert Sibande Region • Morokweng community library completed and was ready opening by March 2009 • 5 mobile book trolleys sites established

Achievements : National • Focused attention on visually impaired – DAISY project ( provinces working with SA Library for the Blind) • Republication of African Literature Classics • National architectural student competition to design a model library completed • Library Transformation Charter – consultations completed • Monitoring and Evaluation Capacity increased

  13. MAJOR CHALLENGES • Staff turn-over v/s skills shortages • Delays in concluding SLAs with municipalities – still Schedule 5 problems • Supply Chain Management issues – esp. in relation to procurement of books and reading material • Infrastructure-related problems – tenders; Public Works and maintenance
