  1. Understanding the world

  2. Geography The children learnt about the Japanese Tsunami disaster from 2011 and then wrote and performed news reports. They tried to empathise with the Japanese people One year group did a focus on comparing locations. They looked at the Japanese and British coastlines and compared their features.

  3. Linked to work learning about parts of a plant, some children did focused work about the origins of different fruits. Children have looked at how industry impacts on the local environment. Willy Wonka had asked them where he could build a new chocolate factory in Thanet.

  4. Some children have looked at aerial photographs and maps to study the local area.

  5. Science Linked to our project on Japan we looked at how volcanoes are constructed and why they erupt. We made volcanoes and used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to recreate the lava. Some children looked at origami and combined this with exploring the properties of materials to create a kite.

  6. One year group used research skills to find out about how living things are suited to their environment. Using investigative skills children have taken measurements an made observations. They have then used this to create line graphs to present the results.

  7. Some year groups focused on the parts of a plant. They studied real plants and then drew and labelled diagrams. Children have investigated materials and their suitability for purpose. Others have used their observational skills to sort living things.

  8. History Key Stage 2 were visited by a Samurai group who performed for them. They looked at the history of the Samurai. As part of the Japanese project the children looked at how calligraphy has been used over time and made links between history and art.

  9. Key Stage 2 focused on World War II and took part in an evacuation day. Pupils studied the fateful Titanic voyage as part of their transport topic.

  10. Henry VIII and his wives were the focus for one year group. They studied the fate of each wife and experimented with role play. In Key Stage 1 pupils have been exploring dinosaurs. They even created their own fossils!

  11. RE Key Stage 1 looked at symbols and their meanings in Christianity. They made crosses and attached poppies and a message of remembrance. One year group focused on inspirational people. They looked at Jesus, Moses and Muhammad as inspirations for their relevant religions. Jon Palmer, who recently won Teacher of the Year at the Signature awards, visited us to talk about being deaf.

  12. Key Stage 2 looked at ‘Angels in Islam’. They re-enacted the story of Muhammad and created information leaflets about the different angels and their roles. Some pupils studied Passover in Judaism and created their own Seder plates using clay and other materials.

  13. Keys Stage 2 children focused on Islam and took part in a pilgrimage to Piermont park to leave special messages. One year group looked at the festival of Holi and had a fantastic time re-inacting it.

  14. In KS2 they learnt about the role of charity and fair trade.
