Literacy skills Human Tights Task Independent Task You are going to watch the short video and must make a quick list of all the human rights you see described – be warned it is fast so you need to be on your toes! Pair Task Now you must compare your list with your partners and compile one longer list if possible (hopefully you will be able to do this) The pair with the longest list wins prizes...... Some of the Human Rights listed under the International Declaration of Human Rights: 1948 • Equality under the law • Freedom from discrimination • Right to Life • Right to Safety and security • Freedom from slavery • Freedom from torture • Fair treatment under the law eg fair imprisonment and a fair trial • Innocent until proven guilty • Freedom from persecution • Right to follow a religion • Right to a name and nationality • Right to move freely from one country to another • Freedom of conscience – your own beliefs • Right to a fair government • Right to marry • Right to an education • Right to a decent wage and fair standard of living • Right to healthcare • Freedom of speech • Right to property & possessions • Right to work • Right to a fair working day eg no exploitation • Right to vote for your government • Right to respect all others and treat equally Count up the scores, mark and hand back Who has the highest score?

Thinking skills Literacy skills Skills of analysis & evaluation Group Task In your small groups you are going to discuss these important issues where human rights may conflict: 1 The right to freedom from torture of an individual V the right to get vital information of a serious crime/ criminal. 2 The right to life V the right to be seen to be carrying out justice in the name of the many victims of all Qaeda Terrorist attacks 3 The right to a fair trial V the right to be seen to be carrying out world justice by killing a criminal even though it breaks international law. (NB: points 2 & 3 are linked ) The aim of this task is to get you discussing, debating, analysing and evaluating the key arguments for and against – not to all sit quietly & agree! 15 mins LO: To discuss/ debate conflict within human rights under international law. Class Debate Bighead • The right freedom from torture of an individual V the right to get vital information from a suspect of a serious crime/ criminal. • The right to life (Bin Laden’s) V the right to be seen to be carrying out justice in the name of the many victims of Al- Qaeda Terrorist attacks • The right to a fair trial (Bin Laden) V the right to be seen to be carrying out world justice even though it breaks international law. Literacy Task 15 mins Now you are going to write an article for the BBC news website on whether on either of the issues below: • The arguments for and against the right to use torture to gain the intelligence needed to locate Bin Laden? • Was it right to shoot an unarmed criminal rather than arrest and put on international trial. You must show both aspects of the argument eg not merely one side (biased) as the BBC must be impartial as it is the British Broadcasting Corporation paid by the public via the licence fee. Explain why. • 3What level do you think your have you worked at today – make a note of it underneath your work? (Think Bighead) • 4Now pass your book to your partner – as your partner must read over your BBC article and use the following criteria to grade your work today: • Does the article have a title & clearly explain the human rights which are in conflict? • Does the article cover both sides of the argument? (evaluation & analysis) • Is the article well written with a conclusion and the arguments clear to understand? • Now grade according to Bighead criteriaand write your name.
