  1. As you come in… Find new seat, Have out page 45, 1-4 Objectives: I can master the unit 1 section B objectives. Catalyst: 1. What were the reference solutions for the Calcium, Iron, Chloride, and Sulfate tests? • What were the test solutions for the tests? • When the test solutions came in contact with the ion they were testing for, what happened?

  2. Introduction • Research and cite the reference for calcium, iron, chloride and sulfate ions in water. Are they helpful or harmful? Why might you want to test for these ions? What would be the consequences of a positive test in your drinking supply? • You must cite at least one source, using MLA or APA style.

  3. In procedure section… • Draw a chart which shows what ions/solutions were in each well. • Describe why the tests solutions were used and what should be formed if the ion is present.

  4. What were the test solutions for each test? What was tested water samples? What were the references for each test? references control Test 1 Test 2 Test 3

  5. Results • Include all 4 data tables. After each table, describe which samples were positive for that ion.

  6. Analysis:These questions must be answered in full sentences and numbered. • Why were a reference and blank used in each test? • What are some problems associated with qualitative tests? • Why can these tests not confirm the absence of an ion? • Why may your observations have changed if you had not thoroughly cleaned your wellplates?

  7. Analysis paragraph • Explain what the results mean. Which ions were in the two unknown solutions? Do you know that any ion was absent? • Must explain the reactions in terms of chemical equations, ions, ionic compounds, polarity of water, and attractions. Why do these ions dissolve in water? Discuss what a precipitate is and why it forms. • Were the results in every well as expected? Why or why not? If you messed up, were you able to correct for this? How did you realize?

  8. Conclusion • Give a one sentence summary of the lab’s methods. • What were the results? What can you conclude from the results? • Relate back to the introduction. Why might you want to conduct these tests and what would you do with these results?

  9. Roundabout Review • On 6 of the 7 tables there are review questions. You must, as a table group, complete all questions at the table. You will have 7 minutes at each table and then you must rotate. • Every group member must write at least 1 table. • At the 7th table, please work on your procedure section of your lab and review with classmates. • Your group will be graded on the review activity. Please include all names and turn in.
