  1. Shopping By Bailey Jacobson

  2. Sharing the Planet The Central Idea The environment is affected by the needs and the wants of people and the choices they make.

  3. What is shopping? • Shopping is when you buy things you need or want. • Shopping involves an exchange of money for products or services. • Wal-Mart is one of the places you can shop.

  4. What do you see at shops / malls? • Most stores you see have the name of the store, lights, and people in them. • Outside there are parking lots, cars, crosswalks, and shopping carts. • Inside you see people shopping and working. • Products to be purchased may be found on shelves. • Different service departments can be found around the store. • Also, plastic or paper bags can be found at the check out counter to put your purchase in.

  5. Where are stores located? • Everywhere • Street/ town/ country • In a garage or yard sale • Even on your computer

  6. What does shopping do? • Meets people’s needs and wants. • Entertains people. • People who work there get an income. • People get toys/ food/ clothes/ furniture/ glasses/ accessories/ bikes/ school stuff/ kitchen stuff/ office stuff/ electric stuff/ water/ drinks. • People can sometimes get a refund for defective products.

  7. Facts about Wal-mart • Sam Walton built it. • 7933 Wal-Mart's are in the U.S.A! • 100,000,000,000 people shop at Wal-Mart stores each year! • In 2007 each store contributed about 28,000,000 metric tons of air pollution!

  8. Plastic bags • Animals can ingest the plastic • The world uses 4 – 5 trillion plastic bags a each year • It takes 430,000 gallons of oil to make 100 non-degradable plastic bags • These bags pollute the food chain • We don't know how many animals die from plastic bags • Plastic bags take 1000 years to decompose

  9. Survey about shopping Average plastic bags received • This is about average plastic bags received each time they go shopping • I learned that most of the people I surveyed go twice per week • I surveyed 22 people ( friends, relatives, and teachers minimum age of 10 years old)

  10. Survey about plastic bags What happens to the plastic bags after you shop • I surveyed 22 people ( friends, teachers, and relatives age minimum age is10 ) • I learned that most people recycle , or reuse the bags • Not many people throw them away • This means that the people I surveyed care for the environment

  11. Animals ingest the plastic When plastic bags find their way into the ocean they kill endangered turtles. Plastic bags are ingested by turtles who confuse them for jellyfish, their primary food source.  The turtles then suffocate. Plastic bags trap seals and sea lions, prevent whales from digesting and kill birds by the thousands.

  12. The world uses 4 – 5 trillion plastic bags a each year more than 330 plastic bags per year per person in America Over 90% of shopping bags are plastic the average American family of four throws away about 1,500 bags a year .

  13. How does shopping effect the environment? These Bags Are Often Burned And Pollute The Environment People Buy Stuff And Carry It Home In Plastic Bags so they don't have to go back and forth back and forth. Air Pollution Damages The Health Of Many Living Organisms like birds and other animals

  14. Other ways shopping affects the environment • Cell phone radiation ( it kills bees/ confuses birds). • Small production ( the company will need to make more and more). • Gasoline ( It has oil, the stuff that comes out of your car makes air pollution, and it makes noise that scares the animals). • Toys ( It’s made out of plastic and gets put in to a landfill and gets wasted

  15. Compact Florescent Light Bulbs • On October 3, 2007, Wal-Mart sold its 100th million compact florescent light bulb • Each CFL saves $30 in utility costs, uses 70 percent less energy than a traditional light bulb, and prevents 450 pounds of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere • By offering a cost effective, environmentally friendly alternative to standard light bulbs, Wal-Mart is reducing global pollution and satisfying its customers at the same time

  16. Solar Energy at Wal-Mart • The average Wal-Mart store uses 1.6 megawatt hours each year (enough electricity for 133,000 homes) • To reduce energy usage, Wal-Mart is employing solar technology in 22 of its Hawaii and California stores • These stores generate 30 percent of the power needed for operations, or over 20 million Kilowatt hours of energy per year, using solar energy • This helps reduce greenhouse gases 6,500 – 10,000 metric tons per year

  17. Delivery trucks • In 2006, Wal-Mart installed high efficiency auxiliary power units on all trucks that make overnight trips, allowing drivers to turn off their truck engines during breaks • To better understand the impact of this change, let’s look at a few facts • Wal-Mart has approximately 2,300 Super Centers in the USA alone • Each of these stores requires 80 – 90 deliveries per week • These deliveries are made by Wal-Mart’s fleet of over 7,000 trucks • Allowing these trucks to turn off their engines during breaks reduces diesel fuel consumption by over 10 million gallons and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 metric tons annually • The reduced fuel costs associated with this change are expected to save Wal-Mart over $25 million per year

  18. What Can be Done? • Wal-Mart started selling reusable plastic bags for $1 in its stores • If Wal-Mart sells its projected 2 million bags, Wal-Mart will have avoided producing 100 million disposable plastic bags • This is equivalent to 1,185,000 pounds of plastic • Automatic lights • White roof (cooler in the summer)

  19. What is Wal-Mart doing to improve? • Solar power, wind power and intelligent lighting • Waterless urinals • Recycling centres for plastic bags • Reusable shopping bag programs • High efficiency power systems on all trucks in the Wal-Mart delivery fleet • Requiring drivers to turn off diesel engines during breaks • Makes fleet more fuel efficient by 15 % • By annual savings in carbon dioxide equal to taking 67,744 cars off the road • Beginning to try other environmentally friendly fuels Turn off Your engine!!!!!

  20. What we can do to help • Don't buy plastic bags • Don't use your car often ( take tram/ bus, bike, or walk) • Don't use your phone • Don't buy easy to break toys • Don't buy extra shoes ( I mean 30 pairs of shoes ) • Don't buy extra items you won't use • Reuse what can be reused (clothing, paper, bottles, paper plates, toys, and books ) • Be careful what you waste/ throw away ( MP3 ) • Recycle • Save energy instead of wasting light bulbs • Buy only what you need • Bring your own containers • Bring your own bags Let’s help the environment!!

  21. Thank you for listening to my presentation!!! I hope you will be more careful when you go shopping!!!
